Just wondering if anyone had any luck doing a manual upgrade to 10.4.9 server, on the copy of D.D. 10.4.7 server/Client that is floating around in the usual place or does anyone know of a way to maybe add the 10.4.9 server components to Uphucks 10.4.9 1.14 R3?

Also is there a way to keep Mac OS X server from communicating back to Mac and finding a invalid serial number?

I'm not a DEV so I don't know the secrets but I am a computer technology student who would like to learn the joys of hosting web and FTP, managing directories, and serving DNS as well as DHCP to my home network.

Thanks in advance for any help with anything.

Its my understanding that OS X Server only scans the local LAN for other machines using the same serial number, it shouldn't be calling home so to speak. If your still worried and have a router of some type, you should be able to use it to block the port OS X uses.

I too have used this Server Image, although I have only updated it to 10.4.8, it worked as I wanted it to at that point so I didn't tempt fate. :D

Sorry I can't help further!

You just found my problem, I also installed a client install off this disk that was running on my network. Thanks

one more question, when you upgraded your server to 10.4.8 did you just update the base OS or did you find a working patch to upgrade the server services as well?

To get to 10.4.8 this is what I did, I know its long but it worked for me :)

1. I installed 10.4.7 + Server Packages all at the same time from the DD image

2. I set up my server, input the serial, set up network connections, time zone, I didnt add any server roles as I was having an issue with this install not being able to set up an OD master hence why I upgraded.

3. Once the machine had rebooted again and I was on the desktop, I inserted the JAS 10.4.8 Intel/AMD disk I had acquired.

4. Booted up off the 10.4.8 disk, unchecked everything in the install except the drivers I needed and the right patch install for my machine (intel)

5. The machine rebooted back into the desktop, it wanted to take me through the client set up but I just quit the app.

Now at this point the machine is a little confused, for some reason the computer name has been cleared, but you can undo this via system prefs (later once we're done), it also still thinks its a 10.4.7 install

6. I downloaded the 10.4.8 Server update from the apple website, I think it was a combo update, not sure

7. I repaired the permissions of the system disk before I proceeded, this may not matter but I will mention it any way.

8. I installed the update BUT DID NOT RESTART, instead I re-installed the intel patch package from the 10.4.8 disk, then I rebooted

9. The machine takes a while then it reboots again before booting back into the desktop.

10. That's it you now have a 10.4.8 Server,

When I say it boots back into the desktop, you will need to login first, its just a quick way of getting the point across.

Once it was all done, I repaired permissions, reset the computer name, and then I started setting up the server roles via Server Admin.

You can try this method and it may work, then again it may screw up your install, I cant give you any further help beyond what I have described above.

Two things I should mention however is that on my install, the kernel panics every 36 hrs or so, I have got around this by scheduling my server to reboot every day at 1am, also I cannot manage the web server from within Server Admin, for some reason it just screws up the configuration files for the Apache, instead I have to configure it manually.

I would be interested to know if updating to 10.4.9 would fix these minor issues, If you manage to get 10.4.9 working then I would be interested to know how? As far as I know there is no reason why a similar method could not allow you to then go from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9, this time however using a OSX86 10.4.9 update or install dvd, followed by the OS X Server 10.4.9 update, followed by the 10.4.9 intel (or AMD) patches.

Good Luck, and let me know how you get on!

I installed the DD 10.4.7 on a Dell 270 with 2 gig of ram and a 80 gig pata drive and it worked flawless, I could manage web server, FTP, turn ports off and on, and even started setting up a directory. Then after about two days all the server functions grayed out and I get the message about invalid serial number. I don't think I honestly even need to upgrade to 10.4.8. I'd just be happy to have the webserver functions.

thanks for all your help and I'll post back here in a week or two if I get time to play with a 10.4.8 or 10.4.9 upgrade.
