/Library/Preferences/com.apple.* files corrupt?

I've recently installed JaS 10.4.8 AMD/Intel SSE2/SSE3 on a newly-upgraded Core 2 Duo/865G/Geforce 6200 (AGP) system.

I'm not having any glaring problems, except Firefox scrolling tends to stutter, not very smooth at all. Safari is much better, oddly. I've tried installing the newest version of flash player and using the Flashblock FF extension, to no avail. QE/CI are enabled and everything else seems butter smooth. XBench scores seem normal.

In investigating that issue, I was going to attempt to enable Quartz 2D Extreme by editing the /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist file, but to my surprise, it appears to be corrupt. I was expecting a nice XML file, but got this:

bplist00Ó_Quartz2DExtremeEnabledZCompositor_CGSInterocitorSelectModeÑ

_deferredUpdates(3NORdf h

Command line text editors show it slightly differently, but just as messed up. Any idea what's going on here? com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist and some others look just fine, but others are all gibberish, like the windowserver file.
