Hello,

I'm trying to repare an imac (g3 with os 9.1) but this is the most messed up mac i ever saw. There are errors on the disk that EHBO-Disk (the mac utily) can't repair. So i wanted to boot from the install cd, but every time i want to boot a cd 'open firmware' shows up. And when i type 'mac-boot', the mac tries to boot, but can't: 'boot succesfully, but returned anyway'. I tried to reset the PRAM http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42642 but that didn't work.

What should i do (the firmware of the mac isn't the most up to date, but i'm afraid that if i try to install the new firmware, i mess up the whole computer because os 9 is totally messy).

EDIT: i installed the new firmware and now i don't get the open firmware, but i just see a map with a question mark in it and after 2 seconds the pc boots normal. I have this with every cd (os9.1, os 9.0, os 8.6 (with os x and techtool pro: i see the white screen with the apple logo booting up but after a minute the drive stops reading the cd and the screen freezes)

WTF is going on with this mac?

Can i acces the hard drive through network, format it (cauze there's an error on it that 'disk utility' can't repair, neither a fresh install of os 9 without booting from the cd) and install an OS on it? The imac can act like a firewire disk, but i don't have a firewire cable to connect my other imac to it. And my other imac hasn't os x server edition so i can't set up a netboot server...

Any suggestions would be welcome

maybe i'll try to install it with xpostfacto (the imac is supported, but won't boot 10.3 cd, so maybe with xpostfacto it does)

is this smart or is this really stupid?

the stupid thing is that i don't have a firewire cable, otherwise i could use target disk mode (anyone in belgium wants to give a firewire cable? ;) )
