so ive been having an issue with my hack since i started using osx. it likes to freeze up at random. like hard freeze. i have to hold the power switch down to shut it down then restart again. i tried disabling Quart2DExtreme, lowering my dram timing, and different releases of osx86. nothing worked. i figured maybe java was causing the problem so i stopped using azureus, replacing it with trasnmission. still froze. one thing i have noticed is that it always does it when im surfing in firefox. so i stopped using firefox and my system has been up for 3 hours now and it hasnt hung yet. im even encoding videos and burning dvd's, which i think would cause more harm than firefox. is firefox the real problem, or could it be firefox plugins causing the problem? has anyone else had a problem like this? :D

if your gonna ask about my spec's, check my sig...

thx for the reply. what r u usually doing when it randomly freezes up? i was just watching disturbia and i left my computer running. only apps running were Adium and Transmission, and the Flurry screensaver. i kept looking over periodically to see if the screensaver was still going and after about an hour it had froze. so depressing...

im prolly gonna build an intel machine as soon as i get some cash. ^_^

well i just started using transmission 2 days ago. this crashing/freezing problem has been goin on since i first started using OSX about a month ago. it seems to do it no matter what apps are running. AMD specific problem im guessing...

i tried changing my FSB multiplier and speed and still hard locks. i wonder how the kernel hackers using AMD are faring with this. surely they must have the same issue as we do.

Reading around the internets, it turns out that firefox is not optimized for OS X, and many users on Mac hardware suffer from the same freezes. They can usually recover using cmd+option+esc, which I haven't tried yet. Apparently, firefox sucks memory like a demon, and after some extended use, especially if you're watching streaming videos, etc., and if you're running a lot of background apps, it'll freeze. Here: http://www.beatnikpad.com/archives/2006/10/26/firefox-20 is a 3rd party optimized build, which I haven't tried yet, but apparently it's more optimized for OS X. There's also camino, which is built from the ground-up for Mac. I'm gonna try some of this stuff when I get home, if I can fix my install. I hope this helps you out a bit...

well i left my machine running for the last hour with no apps running, just the screensaver, and it froze up again. cmd+option+esc is not an option for me because the system is hard-locked. only choice is to kill the power. its something much more fundamental than firefox or whatever other apps i was suspicious of...
