Home and End keys don't work like in WinXP, but there's a little program called Doublecommand that allows you to use the keys like in WinXP. It installs into the system preferences. Try it by doing a google search. The program also allows you to switch the option and command buttons so the layout is exactly like the macs. :(

Is Doublecommand the same program the first responder referred to? How would it change the layout of my keyboard? Does it remap the keys to other functions?

Mac's don't typically use those keys. They aren't part of the standard mac layout.

You can map them using a utility (whose name escapes me at the moment) but some applications will never recognize them.

how do macs typically handle 'home' and 'end' functionality? being new to the osx enviornment, i'm finding a lot of "double key" combos are needed. thanks.

That would be command (apple key) + up key, for HOME and command + down key for END. You can also use command + left/right key to jump left and right.

Cheers,
