Can't do a soft restart

Just installed JAS 10.4.8 for Intel on my Shuttle XPC. After getting around an Nvidia related kernal panic (thanks Boinkytwo), I've pretty much have everything working thanks to other posts.

 

One problem I am having, however, is I cannot do a successful soft reboot. Hard works fine--I can shut down, then reboot, but I cannot do a restart from the Apple menu. The system goes to a blank screen with animated pinwheel and stays there until I do a reset or hard shutdown.

 

Any ideas would be appreciated.
