rschultz101 Posted August 2, 2007 Share Posted August 2, 2007 - Instant ,.... sleep works, what mobo, osx version, laptop works,... since people do need to turn it off, at night,... mine don't , gigabyte GA-G33M-DS2R 10.4.9 v1.2 looks like a real mac wins in most departments,... - back to square 0 install from scratch, back to login is a dvd boot the fastest ? or is it possible to install from flash or usb disk drive,... and how ? - back to square 1 what about the user setup, printers, applications, don't want to install again,... so where to move it, and how, have a different partition for apps and user ? link it, any cavents,... - raptor 10k, is it worse it, xbench, boot times, ultra wide scsi an option ? have a 15k lying around, I'll give it a bench,.. - dual disk + ok, most have 2 or more disks,... lets use them,... swap,.. relocate to second disk, how to ? photoshop scratch disk,.... create 2 extra partitions and soft raid them, xbench,... second osx same size partition for backup clone, - das boot since some need to use windos , vista, linux, backup osx how to have a bootloader, that does not get screwed up, everytime you have to install or update one another, or change disks,... thinking a grub bootloader of a usb flash, with all the entries, - the hard way so some things only get fixed with hardware, so what's the alternative, what works, belkin, griffin to the rescue ? sound - usb sound adapter, has microfone input, no patching needed,.. nic - realtek pci gigabit 10/100/1000 wifi - 1390, hear airport cards work ,... graphics - 7600gs, nvidia cards with 256mb but not 8 series, 7-series best for now, camera - isight compatible, don't know firewire - my ds2r mobo has a 400, got a 1394b pci with TI chipset on order everything else,... - the case apple hardware looks good, does yours ? what case do you use ? and addons,... aka, have a usb sound adapter, takes to ports because it's fat, humms when shutdown,... think griffen has one, is white , has an extension cord,... and you don't have to bend over to plug in your mic,... things like that anybody seen the new keyboard,... http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/07...e_keyboard.html now let's things fly,... no sleep till brooklyn, he wasted 2 installs on his hack meanwhile I'll go play in boston traffic, beasty boys come to town, now show yours Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/58836-mirror-mirror-on-the-wall-who-is-the-faster-of-them-all/ Share on other sites More sharing options...
rschultz101 Posted August 6, 2007 Author Share Posted August 6, 2007 boy is it quiet ,.... - raptor 10k, did try the 2940uw scsi with the 15k and 10k,... no go, needs a bios update,... there are 29160uw cards for mac's,... but 64bit, need to check, if I can fit it, since a chipset heatsink is in the way,... - das boot, multi boot, grub no grub,... lilo multipass,.... grub seems to be not fully compatible with the way mac , and windows mbtr is used, on diskutil,... have not had a chance to test,.... hints - the case, http://www.2cpu.com/articles/22_1.html will give that a try, for portability, so I can use it for contract work on site, otherwise a much more expensive 17" laptop would do, a quiet macpro style case be nice, for the guys, with a full box ? but where - the hard way litle usb bluetooth adapter works, firewire 800 card works, watch out for 64bit pci versions, might not fit yours due chipset heatsink, this one has the texas instruments chipset, no xbench yet,.. anybody else ? motherboards ? anybody got sleep to work, and sata in native mode ? firewire 800 esata usb fw 400 enclosure, for the ones, can't decide what interface is best,... usb for work, firewire 800 , for hotplug, and esata for the times you need to transfere 500gb ,.... http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20Wor...ng/MEFW924AL1K/ of course it's got to be quiet, and more reliable than those mybook editions, noisy and fail, what brings me to the next,.... external raid ?, maybe internal softraid ? please post, litle feedback motivation,... shoarthing Posted August 6, 2007 Share Posted August 6, 2007 SCSI: LSI's 21320-R U320 adaptor works [no optical device function when I tried it] - all Adaptec & other LSI SCSI hosts I've tried [dunno about ATTO] appear to have ppc kexts only. Haven't tried LSI's firmware 'RAID' feature in this host in OS X: this would presumably require the 'AppleLSIFusionMPT.kext' rather than the 'LSIUltra320.kext" . . . haven't tried my hardware RAID LSI 320-2X & no longer have a 320-2e. FireWire800: a 64-bit TI chipset card [ADS Pyro 1394b] works in a 32/33 slot & is shown in profiler as supporting 800 [haven't yet attached the ProAvio DVBox to test the thing]; but ADS specify this card as dropping to 400 in a 32/33MHz slot: NB - natty (& tiny) new UniBrain PCIe 1394b number here - is listed in the States & in the EU RAID: the Asus P5WDH - Deluxe has a transparent SATA RAID widget [sil4723] - the thing takes one of the ICH7R ports & splits it to a coupla 1.5 ports. This widget is driverless & can be jumpered to provide RAID0/1/JBOD & works OK. Since this mobo has exceptionally good suport under OS X & now has [OK~ish] BIOS support for 1333MHz C2Ds it remains a sensible buy for those wanting a cheap solid workstation booting off a mirrored volume.
