Hi guys,

I've just installed uphuck 1.4i r2 on the machine in my sig. It went on very easily. I had to patch a few kexts to get onboard LAN, jmicron and stereo sound.

Things are generally fine but I have a couple of issues:

1. The fonts look awful. I know OSX renders differently to XP but they look at lot worse than the iMac and MBP I've used at the macstore. Any ideas why? Would the JaS release be better?

2. When booting up, I get the grey apple screen for about 5 seconds and then my monitor goes to sleep for about 25 seconds until the login window comes up. Is that normal?

3. My machine doesn't wake from sleep. I gather this is pretty common. I've not tried the paulicat method yet.

4. How stable are hackintoshes? Can you run it as your main machine (I want to)? The only error I've had so far is when I ran geekbench. At the end of the bench, it just dissappeared. When I tried to bring up the activity monitor, my machine went to sleep. As per 3, it doesn't wake up and so I had to reset. The second time I ran, it worked fine. Just a glitch or something more serious?

5. Some of my preferences don't seem to persist between boots. I'm guessing this might be a permissions thing? Can I just use the Disk Utility repair permissions thingy?

6. What do people tend to do with regards to filling in the information on boot up after install? name, address etc? Basically lie?

Ultimately, if I can get reasonable answers to these questions I would like to use OSX as my main machine and that means a lot of photography processing. Do people generally think that a hackintosh is good enough for that?

a lot of questions I know. If people have an opinion I'd love to hear it.

thanks!

Matt

Hi badge,

Yes, I saw that thread. In fact it was you getting it going on a p5k-e that convinced me to go for it. Thanks!

None of the issues I've asked about are covered in that thread though. I thought more people might have answers but nobody has bitten so far!

any opinions yourself?

cheers,

Matt

  • 1 month later...

I am not running the same equipment as you but am using my hackintosh as my main system (mainly photo and video editing)

Currently I am running uphuck 10.4.9 v1.3

#1 - I am not sure why they look great on my system compared to windows (run vista on my other partition) my video card is a geforce 6600 (using natit .2) Monitor is an acer AL2216w

#2 exact same on my system monitor goes into a blank power saving mode type of thing then bam back on although mine is only for about 5 seconds not 25.

#3 Same this is a known issue with a lot of hackintosh's just disable power saving in your preferences.

#4 I have had 0 crash's so far . system has been working fantastic for me.

#5 What permissions seem to go away? I would try the repair tool for sure. I was shocked how many of mine where wrong.

#6 I never put my real info in those types of register boxes.

Video and photography editing is what I do for a living and the Macintosh has been great! I do find Adobe CS3 products are slower on the Mac than Windows (especially Dreamweaver!! ouch) but Final Cut Studio is awesome. I really miss Vista's explorer (Finder almost reminds me of being back using OS/2 years ago and even it's file browser was more advanced than finder) and the quick minimize every window button (anyone know of something similar for OSX?). I really like Safari and Adium is an awesome messenger client!

Hope that helps
