After a year of working well, my computer suddenly has problems turning on. I push the power button and nothing. Holding the power button for a minute will ussually get it to start. After shutting down it turns back on by itself in a few seconds. :( This happens for a few hours and goes away, and everything is normal. I know i have everything plugged in correctly too.

So does anyone know what could be going on, and what i can do? Maybe bad powersupply or motherboard?

lol... yeah, ive got an idea... its that stuff that happens right when your warranty expires :).... or it could be the power supply... or motherboard... i guess the motherboard would be the most likely, since it is what ultimatly determines whether its going to be off or on..

btw, laptop or desktop, and what brand? is it new?

My first guess would be a bad PSU. Do you have access to a spare just for testing? Also, have you installed or re-installed a video card or any other board in your computer? If you press too hard when plugging in a card, you can cause a hairline crack in your motherboard which can cause this kind of instability. This kind of thing can also be the result of a processor that's ready to go or even ram that is going bad.

Unfortunately, this is a symptom of many possible causes. Some can be determined by software (memtest e.g.). Other tests require the ability to swap out parts or having specialized equipment to test circuitry. No easy answer to this.

I second all these responses - it could be a lot of things.

If your PSU was cheap (or came 'free' with the case), swap it to something decent first. You really get what you pay for with Power Supplies, more so than many other components.

I swapped a generic PSU recently on a computer which ran ok, but the video would start flickering on and off after about 20-30 mins (and would stop flickering if the CPU was running at 100% :worried_anim: ). Problem disappeared.
