Security Updates and Such...

I'm just about ready for my first try at installation. But I gotta ask: between the JaS and Uphuck distros, I notice the PPC code is removed (or trimmed) in the Uphuck versions. What functionality is lost?

Also, I see a lot of threads covering major release updates (e.g. 10.4.8 -> 10.4.9). If I load a particular release, what about regular security and application patches from Apple? I notice that running the Updater is not a good thing to do on a Hackintosh. If I manage to get a release up and running, should I disable the Updater? How do I prevent the OS from updating itself after the initial install? And again, what about security and application patches later on?

Thanks and best regards,

t-e

JaS and uphuck are both solid releases. Recently uphuck has been releasing versions that cut out a lot of the unnecessary stuff. 1.4i v2 is for intel only and is stripped of a lot of ppc code, but still contains rosetta so software like MSO2004 still works. All new universal binary stuff should work. Uphuck will be releasing and ix version soon that will be sans rosetta too. An 'a' version is also on the way which will be only for amd processors. Previous uphuck versions contained lots of useful software which is no longer on the smaller sized installer discs.

Once the OS is installed, you can download and install most all updates from Apple, except for the version upgrades. These need to be done via patched upgrades that are readily available...e.g. KoolKal's 10.4.10 update.

Update merely informs you of what is available to update. You still have to choose which updates you want to install. Hope this helps.

Yes, that clears up quite a few things. I have a pretty generic box I'd like to try this on. All the hardware shows up on the HCL as being problem-free, or with plenty of support - at least with JaS. I need MSO2004. so I'm glad you mentioned that.

One more thing about updates: You say I have to pick and choose, and avoid major release updates. What about security updates to the core OS? Does someone generally post a list of trouble-free patches, or do updates like that generally get rolled up in to update packages from the distro developers?
