keyboard problems

I recently installed OS X Uphuck 10.4.9 onto my Dell e1505 laptop. I have had several problems with my keyboard, however:

 

1) When I remap the control, command, and alt keys using System Preferences, the next time I reboot, my mappings are reset to the default (I don't see any option to set my key mapping to the default)

 

2) Is there any way to assign the multimedia buttons (mute, volume, play keys) to do actions (e.g., change or play a song in iTunes)? The volumne up and down automatically were detected and work for the sound, but I don't know how to use the other ones.
