I know someone knows the answer to this problem!

My system has worked with OSx86 JAS 10.4.8 install for months, many reinstalls without problems during that time.

I needed to reinstall again this weekend, so I upgraded to 10.4.10 to see what it would do... it didn't work!

I fixed the "dead" drive (GUID partition table) and had to clear the BIOS CMOS to get WinXP to install. I also flashed the BIOS to the same version I've been using to eliminate any question. The system works with WinXP as normal.

I removed all old drives, and installed a new IDE drive. I did try the old drives, but I got the same problems described below. I then used the same OSx86 install DVD I've been using (also made a 2nd copy from ISO to make sure nothing was wrong with install media).

The install completes normal as it has in the past. After reboot, with install DVD still in drive, it counts down and then says "com.apple.boot.plist" not found. It halts. If I remove the DVD, it gets to where it checks where it should boot from, DVD or HD, and then just stops.

I found a link to what someone said was a normal com.apple.boot.plist file. I used a Linux live CD to replace the com.apple.boot.plist (note that the file is where it should be on the system drive), but all the same problems.

If it's not the install media, old or new HDs, and a fresh BIOS, what am I missing on a system that worked for months?

Any ideas?

(I'm running DFI Lanparty NF4 Ultra-D and AMD 4400+)

Thanks for the reply. Before I posted in this forum, based on something else I read, I did manually set my system drive to active, but what I did didn't solve the problem. The result of setting the drive to active was a message telling me the drive was already set to active. I could try again, do you know of a link describing how to set the drive to active or add/modify the boot flag?

I have not given up on this yet... I have a third HD which has always been a Windows drive, never installed in my system. I'm going to flash the BIOS again, install only the new HD, and disconnect my network connection during install. This will eliminate any remains of previous installs and possible "interjection" of something from Apple during install. On occasion, my WinXP install tells me my serial is not valid if I'm connected to the net.

BTW, I came across other posts that descirbe how to fix this with VM, but since my system worked in the past, I have not tried this method. Also, many replies indicate it doesn't work for other people. I was looking for something telling me more about what is likely happening. I find that just trying things works on occasion, but understanding why it's broken will really improve the chances of a fix!

If it still doesn't work, I'll have to start researching again.

Holy Cow, it looks as if I get the EXACT SAME MESSAGE AFTER INSTALL, when the media is left in the DVD Drive, BUT WHEN I take it out NOTHING at all happens!

by the way BJ thats a Hell of a system u got there!! I envy you boy!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks! I bought a quad Mac Pro back in December and wasn't happy with the Bootcamp support for Windows. When I discovered this site, I figured I'd sell the Mac Pro and build something equally powerful for both PC and Mac. I decided to keep the Mac Pro, but I got hooked on perfecting the Mac side of my PC. Now, since I use the same model monitor for each system, I actually lose track of whether I'm on the Mac or the Hac. And since Windows is still my first choice of OS, I've now got the best of both worlds.

I fixed the HDs to be able to install WinXP, I wanted to make sure the system at least worked with Windows, and it did, XP installed without problem.

I used an old 20 GB HD I knew had never been used with any OS but Windows.

I flashed my BIOS again using the floppy I used several months ago when my system worked with OSx86.

I installed OSx86 using the same DVD I used in the past that worked, with the network connection disconnected.

OSx86 installed as normal and came up with the exact same problems I describe above not finding the plist file... all this and all I did that I think screwed it up was update to 10.4.10.

I am going to try one more thing, I cleared the CMOS and took the battery out. I'll try the install again later.

[FIXED] - I'm posting from my broken system, now fixed and finally running 10.4.10...

I put the battery back in the MB, but I don't think that fixed it, just FYI. Easy to try in any event.

I downloaded another image from pirate bay (torrent:Osx 10.4.10 AMDVM_SSE3 TEST1, file:tub_Osx10410_AMDVM_SSE3.rar listed at 2442124908 Bytes by tubgirl), it's 10.4.10 for AMD. I'm running a GeForce 7600GT 256MB as well, I used the nVidia NV40 driver during the install, and it works well, same in 10.4.8 I was using before.

I used an old HD after I did a diskpart -> clean all.

I created a partition setting it for MBR in MAC disk utility. I'm not going to try now, but I think that may have fixed the 10.4.8 install I was working on as well.

I need to install onto my bigger HD now and try out Final Cut Studio 2.0. The whole reason for doing the reinstall in the first place...

Isn't this what makes computers so much fun? Also love the fun of going to apple.com on my $400 Hackintosh with an Apple keyboard and 3 button mouse and pricing out a $10K Mac Pro with lots of stupid expensive FB memory!

I installed a bigger HD as the only drive in the system. The OS install completed, and everything is working so far.

I did install Final Cut Studio 2 without problem, and everything is working great - not like the last version of Studio Pro in bits that took me hours to put together and get everything working without breaking other apps in Studio!

All this good looking stuff has got me thinking I really need one or two 30" LCDs now...

same problem here

Nicknowsky, Axet, Cubic, have any of you tried to do the install by using disk utility to set up the install disk partition for MBR? If that doesn't work, try a different install image? Have any of you ever gotten the install to work on your system at any time?

This is the time i'll be installing mac osx on this machine but the specs seems to be compatible. I am using uphuck v1.4i. I set up my hard drive with the apple disk utility after having performed a low level format of the drive. I left the drive settings to default since I am not interested in dual booting.

I had that problem when I first tried installing. All I did was format the hdd completely with the zero out method under security in disk utility. I also made the hdd the master boot partition under the partition section.

After that, everything worked fine for me. hope this helps.
