FIXED: Missing DVD Drive in WinXP...Bad, iTunes, bad!

I posted a HELP topic this past week here:

http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=56928

About how my DVD drive vanished in My Computer. Device Manager showed the device having the dreaded yellow exclamation point. No one seemed to have an answer.

After various tests to find a solution (uninstalling most recent updates and software, uninstalling and reinstalling the device, etc), I found a Microsoft KB article with a fix here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320553

After deleting the two registry keys and restarting the system, iTunes launched because my Ipod Nano was plugged in. Immediately there was an error by iTunes that a registry change had occurred relating to the DVD drive (something to do with burning or importing, can't remember), and that I should reinstall iTunes. Ah-ha! It WAS last week's recent iTunes update. I thought by uninstalling iTunes, the problem would be fixed, but it wasn't, so I figured iTunes wasn't the culprit. Obviously uninstalling iTunes did not remove those registry keys. I haven't yet tried to see if an iTunes reinstall will hose my DVD drive, again. But at least I know how to fix it.

I wonder if Apple is aware of this.

Anyway, I hope this helps some other unlucky soul.

The system this happened on follows:

'07 Macbook Pro 2.4 GHz

4 GB RAM

160 GB hard drive.

Windows XP SP2 w all MS updates

Bootcamp Beta 1.3

UPDATE 7-15-07

Repairing the iTunes installation via Control Panel Add or Remove Programs has given me full functionality of CD importing/burning without losing the drive.

Sorry for the necropost, but this fix is in error.

The relevant Knowledge Base article no longer exists, however, I found one here

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

which would appear to be the same one that xkelly refered to. I recently experienced this problem with iTunes 8, I hope this helps other people who do.
