Muting bug

Hi,

 

This is a strange issue. I'm using JaS 10.4.7 on an HP dv5000.

 

SYMPTOM 1: I just got my audio to work using AppleAC97Audio.kext and have full volume control. My volume and mute buttons on my keyboard work as well, which is amazing. However, after about five minutes, my volume becomes muted. When a system sound occurs or I manually change the volume or unmute, the sound unmutes. I wouldn't mind so much since it does play all sounds, but there's a bit of a lag time (i.e. a sound plays and it takes a bit of time to unmute, and the sound is cut off from the beginning by a bit, which creates a popping sound in the speakers.)

 

SYMPTOM 2: My PC started to run slow when I went to the Audio control in System Prefs to check out some things. Activity Monitor indicated that "System Preferences" was taking up 60-80% of CPU and causing some heating of my laptop. The graph turned almost solid red.

 

This is an interesting issue, and I didn't find anyone else to experience this. Maybe I need to start fresh with my audio kexts since this one seems to be malfunctioning. Can someone suggest where I can find kexts for AC97 audio (sorry if that's vague)?

I figure this can be solved by reinstalling the audio kext(s). Does anyone know of any kexts that work with AC97?

I saw someone on a PowerPC Mac had this problem and solved it by installing an update and resetting their PRAM, but I don't have either of those options. No one else has this bug in JaS 10.4.7?
