same thing happen to me. Its an issue with SoundMax. simple way to fix it.

Open Finder

Go To "Applications"

Open "Utilities Folder"

Open "Audio MIDI Setup"

Under "Properties For", there should be 2 "AC97 Audio (PCM)" choices, Change it to the one which shows the Output settings.

Once you have the Output settings visible, change the audio output to "4Ch-16bit"

Then click "Configure Speakers"

Change The Left and Right Front Speakers to "3" and "4".

Udenr the Audio MIDI setup in properties for I have only HD Audio Output, and I have only 2Ch options.

The second thing is that under volume sliders only 1 and 2 are active. I can't slide M (master I think)

How did you install this soundcard's driver?

I'm using Uphuck's 10.4.9 v1.3 distro, which have the drivers for SoundMax built-in. I just enabled Soundmax under Bios and configured the settings in Audio Midi and had sound.
