I've tried a million methods and images and I can't get a single one to boot natively. The closest I come is with VMWARE. When I try to boot natively, the system just hangs after it finds the root disk.

I'm guessing that this has something to do with my IDE controller or DMA support in general. When I boot in VMWARE, I get to this line:

AppleIntelPIIXPATA: PIIX4 (CMD 0x1f0, CTR 0x3f4, IRQ 14, BM 0x1050)

The system stalls for a minute, and then I get this:

Your virtual machine has sent an ATAPI (CD-ROM) command that is supported only when programming the drive via DMA. You will need to configure your guest operating system to use DMA when communicating with DVD/CD-ROM devices.

Note that some operating systems will report DMA is available without actually using it. In those cases, normal CD-ROM operations will still be available, but special features will only be available if you reconfigure the virtual device as a SCSI device.

I've read that I might have to modify some kexts, but I am not sure how. If anyone has any suggestions, I would really like to hear them.

I have a Compaq Presario v2312us with an AMD Turion 64 CPU. Other info about relevant hardware was either generic or unavailable..

Thanks!

bios?

I know that I have a RS482 and there isn't the option to turn on or off DMA. I think the problem is that the OSX install disk is trying to use an ATAPI command instead of DMA. That's what all these "Still Waiting for Root Device" problems are. I can hear my DVD drive slowing down and stopping all together because it isn't getting DMA instructions.

Any ideas on how to solve this issue? Is there a DMA kext? Maybe a bootdisk that puts the ATAPI layer down before booting off the DVD?

Please, let me know. I know a bunch of people are having this problem but asking in different ways.

I searched around and found this post by kday:

I guess he added AppleGenericPCATA.kext IOATAFamily.kext. Now my boot goes a good deal further, but it is incredibly slow and eventually hangs anyway. I get a lot of errors..I'll record them and post later today. I'm trying to run natively and my bios has almost nothing in it.

By the way, my keyboard doesn't work when I boot into single-user mode, any ideas?

Thanks!

This is the issue I'm dealing with when I install in VMWare. The solution seems to be to install the PS2controller.kext but that messes with the whole thing.

I'll post if I find anything else out.

Here are a couple of pics from my boot..one is the initial sequence, the other is the last stuff I see before it hangs for good. After it says it's loading the login window, the screen goes black, then I see the blue mac desktop and a cursor in the top-left, but nothing else. It hangs there forever, and it takes an hour or two to get that far.

Please post if you have any ideas!

Is that native or through VMWare?

That's native..VMWare boots just fine.

Well, right now you are further than I am. I'm trying to figure out a way to install extensions without screwing up the extensions.mkext but I can't seem to get any help on this. People keep on mentioning terminal but no reference as to where I can use this mysterious terminal (other than OSX).

Well, keep in contact if you come up with anything
