Can't mount Disk Image (.dmg) of backup

So I need some advice here..... I have a (now failed) drive that started making dreaded noises when I was - ironically - backing up. The first backup, via Carbon Copy, only cloned part of the user directory I really need. The disk thereafter was completely unmountable, but would still spin and make noise. I then used DD via terminal and copied the drive to another local volume as a .dmg. Problem is, now I can't mount that image. Is there anyway to insert a mount point in the now created image? Can you alter or explore an image without actually mounting it? I only need to recover a few files.

My drive is now far gone and the only option would be to send it in for $$$ and have someone in a clean room try to fix it... Any way I can use that image I made?
