68jimmy
Good Afternoon, I have been playing around with the Jas 10.4.8 dvd for a week or so now trying out varius flavors of machines I had laying around at the office. So far I have only had the best luck with an older Dell 8200 with an AGP Nvidia FX5500 w/ 256MB graphics. When I install just the the Intel and Nvidia packages it installs, reboots and plays the movie with sound but when I run "About this Mac" it just flashes the screen and the crash reporter complains about the login window. I did try to install the 10.4.4 login window from the DVD but on reboot all I get is a black screen after the gray apple screen. If I select the Common hardware package along with the other two, on reboot it look ok and the "About this Mac" works! But on a reboot all I get is a black screen after the gray logo... If I select just the intel package it installs ok, but on reboot it hangs on the gray apple logo, but you can hear the sound from the initial movie playing... Here is some info from system profiler on my last successful reboot... So far I have a 3com 3c905b installed but was not detected. Nor was the audio detected but it does work. Thanks in advance! donovan Hardware: Hardware Overview: Machine Name: Apple Development Platform Machine Model: ADP2,1 Processor Speed: 2.39 GHz Number Of Processors: 1 Total Number Of Cores: 1 Memory: 1 GB Bus Speed: 533 MHz L2 Cache: 512 KB Network: Built-in Ethernet: Type: Ethernet Hardware: Ethernet BSD Device Name: en0 IPv4: Configuration Method: DHCP IPv6: Configuration Method: Automatic Proxies: FTP Proxy Enabled: No FTP Passive Mode: Yes Gopher Proxy Enabled: No HTTP Proxy Enabled: No HTTPS Proxy Enabled: No RTSP Proxy Enabled: No SOCKS Proxy Enabled: No Software: System Software Overview: System Version: Mac OS X 10.4.8 (8L2127) Kernel Version: Darwin 8.8.1 Boot Volume: hackintosh Computer Name: donovan’s Computer User Name: donovan (donovan) ATA: ATA Bus: WDC WD800BB-00JHC0: Capacity: 74.53 GB Model: WDC WD800BB-00JHC0 Revision: 05.01C05 Serial Number: WD-WCAM95824395 Removable Media: No Detachable Drive: No BSD Name: disk0 Protocol: ATA Unit Number: 0 Socket Type: Internal Low Power Polling: No OS9 Drivers: No S.M.A.R.T. status: Verified Volumes: hackintosh: Capacity: 74.53 GB Available: 71.59 GB Writable: Yes File System: Journaled HFS+ BSD Name: disk0s1 Mount Point: / ATA Bus: HP DVD Writer 400: Capacity: 4.38 GB Model: HP DVD Writer 400 Revision: HH19 Serial Number: 7797601YCQFFW1 Removable Media: Yes Detachable Drive: No BSD Name: disk1 Protocol: ATAPI Unit Number: 0 Socket Type: Internal Low Power Polling: No OS9 Drivers: No S.M.A.R.T. status: Not Supported Volumes: JaS 10.4.8 AMD Intel SSE2 SSE3: Capacity: 4.38 GB Available: 867.05 MB Media Type: DVD+R Writable: No File System: HFS+ BSD Name: disk1s3 Mount Point: /Volumes/JaS 10.4.8 AMD Intel SSE2 SSE3 Disc Burning: HP DVD Writer 400c: Firmware Revision: HH19 Interconnect: ATAPI Burn Support: Yes (Unsupported) Profile Path: None Cache: 8192 KB Reads DVD: Yes CD-Write: -R, -RW Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO Media: Media Type: DVD+R Blank: No Erasable: No Overwritable: No Appendable: No FireWire: Graphics/Displays: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500: Chipset Model: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500 Type: Display Bus: PCI VRAM (Total): 256 MB Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de) Device ID: 0x0326 Revision ID: 0x00a1 Displays: Display: Status: No display connected DELL 1905FP: Resolution: 1152 x 864 @ 75 Hz Depth: 32-bit Color Core Image: Supported Main Display: Yes Mirror: Off Online: Yes Quartz Extreme: Supported Memory: RIMM1: Size: 256 MB Type: RDRAM Speed: Unknown Status: OK RIMM2: Size: 256 MB Type: RDRAM Speed: Unknown Status: OK RIMM3: Size: 256 MB Type: RDRAM Speed: Unknown Status: OK RIMM4: Size: 256 MB Type: RDRAM Speed: Unknown Status: OK Power: System Power Settings: AC Power: System Sleep Timer (Minutes): 10 Disk Sleep Timer (Minutes): 10 Display Sleep Timer (Minutes): 10 Sleep On Power Button: Yes USB: USB Bus: Host Controller Location: Expansion Slot Host Controller Driver: AppleUSBUHCI PCI Device ID: 0x2444 PCI Revision ID: 0x0004 PCI Vendor ID: 0x8086 Bus Number: 0x9f USB Bus: Host Controller Location: Expansion Slot Host Controller Driver: AppleUSBUHCI PCI Device ID: 0x2442 PCI Revision ID: 0x0004 PCI Vendor ID: 0x8086 Bus Number: 0x5f Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop® 2.20: Version: 0.53 Bus Power (mA): 500 Speed: Up to 1.5 Mb/sec Manufacturer: Microsft Product ID: 0x00e3 Vendor ID: 0x045e USB High-Speed Bus: Host Controller Location: Expansion Slot Host Controller Driver: AppleUSBEHCI PCI Device ID: 0x00e0 PCI Revision ID: 0x0002 PCI Vendor ID: 0x1033 Bus Number: 0x4a TD Classic 003C: Capacity: 1.92 GB Removable Media: Yes Detachable Drive: Yes BSD Name: disk2 Version: 1.00 Bus Power (mA): 500 Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec Manufacturer: Memorex OS9 Drivers: No Product ID: 0x0008 Serial Number: 06B0BA6151B0F96F S.M.A.R.T. status: Not Supported Vendor ID: 0x08ec Volumes: TRAVELDRIVE: Capacity: 1.92 GB Available: 1.2 GB Writable: Yes File System: MS-DOS FAT16 BSD Name: disk2s1 Mount Point: /Volumes/TRAVELDRIVE USB Bus: Host Controller Location: Expansion Slot Host Controller Driver: AppleUSBOHCI PCI Device ID: 0x0035 PCI Revision ID: 0x0041 PCI Vendor ID: 0x1033 Bus Number: 0x2a USB Bus: Host Controller Location: Expansion Slot Host Controller Driver: AppleUSBOHCI PCI Device ID: 0x0035 PCI Revision ID: 0x0041 PCI Vendor ID: 0x1033 Bus Number: 0x0a
thestevo
Does this black screen have a blinking cursor, or just totally black? Have you applied PPF1 and the_defiant PPF to your install disc? This sounds to me like your second set of options you tried worked fine. The issue stemmed from the way the MBR was configured, which is why it wouldn't boot a second time. If you apply the_defiant patch and reinstall from the new disc you should no longer have that problem. For the most part, if you get it to boot once fine, then it installed fine. If it won't boot after that, its usually a disc issue. Still, there are other possibilities. Stevo
68jimmy
Stevo, thanks for reply. I think I finally figured it out. Now as an fyi I am using Jas's OS X 10.4.8 with ppf1... I started from scratch yesterday and took the following steps. 1. Booted DVD, re-partitioned the disk, verified the disk, selected just the Intel.Kext's with SSE2+SSE3 2. Install completed ok, rebooted. 3. System booted ok, although my graphics were w/o CI&QE. Mounted DVD and installed 10.4.4 login window, rebooted. 4. Systen booted ok, About this Mac worked! Mounted DVD once more and installed the Nvidia NV40 package, rebooted. 5. System booted ok, About this Mac works ok. Shutdown system several times and restarted without ay problems. So now I need to get my network operating. I have tried a 3co 3c905b and a broadcom 57xx pci cards with no luck. I'll see if I have an intel card stashed somewhere. And when I play any audio it sounds like the chipmunks are singing! For now this system is just a practice box so I can wait to get some extra money together so I can build one from scratch... Thanks for the help. donovan
