X1950XTX Support

Hello all

I recently installed OSX 10.4.8 Jas build onto my machine which contains a X1950XTX card. After alot of searching around on the net and reading I have managed to come up with a few minor solutions to get full support.

I have created this thread in the hope that myself and other with the same issue might be able to get this problem resolved (that and it annoying trying to root around forums for info on this card).

Once OSX is installed initially I have noticed that QE and CI are enabled and supported (according to hte system profiler). the only issues I get is the fact that I get artifiacts appears every so ofter (not too bad) and I cannot change the resolution (unless you ticker with the boot options Boot Options

You can set the resolution here but that only allows you to do that resolution also it does fix the tearing issue.

Anyways if you goto this thread and downlaod the driver package for X1950XT this actually gives you full support such as Resolution changing, also fixes the artifacts appears on the screen X1950XT Driver . This driver works thankx to Jccool.

the only remaining issue and from my reading everyone with a X1950XTX appears to be getting this problem is the cards cooling fan runs at full speed. This would appear to be the only remaining issue with having this card.

My thinknig on this issue is that ATI use dynamic clocking so rather than having the card at a constant clock speed and there for having the cooling fan spinning at full speed, they lower the core/mem clock speed to reduce the heat and there for the fan can run at a lower speed.

For some reason installing the above X1950XT driver makes this run at full speed (mind you I haven't read anywhere that this causes any adverse effects).

Mind you it would be good to be able to get this last issue sorted. So if anyone has any idea's or suggestion (apart from replacing the cooling system on the computer) post them here.

If I come across anything new I will continue to post hear

I've also got a 1950XTX and it works perfectly thanks to Jccool (cheers :D )

From what i can gather the X1950XT uses the same 3 pin fan connector as the X1900's where the X1950XTX uses a different cooler with 4 pins wired slightly differently.

Until a possible driver fix is ready there are two ways around the issue -

1) unplug the standard XTX fan from the graphics board and attach to a seperate compatible fan controller if you've got one or you can just push the XTX fan connector direct onto a motherboard header (if you've got one close enough).

2) use a third party HSF that can attach to one of your motherboard fan controller headers. (but as you say this means changing the cooling...)

I went for option number 2 as I already had an Arctic Cooling Accelero X2 on my XTX. The only thing to bear in mind when attaching to the motherboard is that when running 3D apps the temperature will go up and the graphics board wont be capable of increasing fan speed to compensate. On the up side - most third party coolers like the accelero (which is pretty cheap now) and the Zalmans are near silent at 100% speed so as long as your motherboard supports manual fan speed settings for its headers then you should be fine to crank it right up and leave it at the cooler higher speed.

Well good news

I have managed to make a break throguh with regards to fan running at full speed.

I just installed OSX normally and rather than installed jccools x1950XTX package I followed his instruction for just replacing the ATINDRV.kext file (this was used for another solution entirely)

Basically it is this file the enabled higher resolution support and fixed the screen artifacts that you would normally get. x1950xtx cards appear to have QE/CI and Rotation support out of the box.

Anyways this appears to have fixed the fan running at higher speeds continously.

However there is one drawback and that is DVI monitors do not work when you do this method. You have to switch to a analogue monitor.

Now does anyone know how to get DVI support working

I am running leopard 10.5.2 with an ati x1950xtx and I installed Jccools driver and everything except the menus work as it should. All menus including the start menu (or whatever you call it) is black. All menus in all programs and also the settings popup windows. Therefore it is really hard to use mac right now. Have anyone succeded wiyth this video card and leopard?

I am currently running 10.5.2 with a x1950xtx, and all works perfectly, except for the fan which is indeed running at maximum speed, which is indeed terribly annoying.

I used the standard NATI or something drivers. Has anyone got the card to work normally, and get the GPU to NOT go into turbo mode? (as Ithink the system doesn't require the full processor power?)

I'm using a zalman VF900 on the card instead of the stock cooler.

That's not too expensive and will save a lot of troubles.

Only thing that doesn't work with the card is wake from sleep (system is running fine but diplay is corrupted)
