been trying all day to get the image on a hard drive using dd.exe in windows but never got a bootable one so im trying knoppix as ubuntu wouldnt run for me. i only had a old knoppix 3.3 live cd lying around so im using that. when trying to dd the .img file to my spare hard drive it says its a directory and does nothing else. ive put 2 ide hard drives in my pc alongside my 2 sata drives that are raid 0 with windows on. one hard drive has the .img on it the other is blank but im new to linux and cant figure out how to dd to it.. all the guides ive read just end up with the console saying dd opening hda5 is a directory

been fiddling with vmware trying to get darwin or a bootable tiger dvd installer to run but always get this error in pic. its did that error the last time ive booted with install dvd to try a install for real aswell. also times before i was getting so far through the initial loading stage of the dvd to the part were it says creating ram drive then it would say loading crash dumper , then it scroll loads of screens of crash dump messages.

can someone point me to what patches i should need minimum for a install dvd

system is

amd 64 x2 4800

dfi ultra d nf4 motherboard

ati x800xl pci express gfx card

1gb ddr 600

2 sata drives ( for windows disabled for tiger install)

2 ide hard drives

dvd burner

would having my system overclocked cause it any problems? does the installer presume it to have only a 200mhz fsb and ddr 400 ram?

thanks

running a disk in vmware with oah750d and ioata patches so far. getting this error though

panic(cpu 0 caller 0xC0321D8B): unable to find driver for this platform: "ADP2,1"

edit: never mind the extensions folder cured that

but now getting this

one way or another i always get that waiting for remote debugger message and it hangs there

decided to burn it to dvd to see whathappens and it gets to this:

applegenericPCATADriver: CMD M0x1f0, CTR 0x3f4, IRQ14

WARNING: ATA drive claims FLUSH CACHE EXT feature support but does not claim extended LBA feature support

ATAController device blocking bus

usbf 80.994 MACH II [0x270b900] error setting feature (1). err=0x000404f ( i think thats something to do with my mach 2 pahase change cooler will disconnect it and try again)

applegenericPCATADriver: CMD 0x170, CTR 0x374, IRQ 15

STILL WAITING FOR ROOT DEVICE

STILL WAITING FOR ROOT DEVICE

and it just keeps going with waiting for root device.

the hard disk im using is a maxtor diamond max9 80gb ATA / 133 HDD does it support 133 ata or only 100? i connected a old xbox western digital hard disk which is knackerd and i think is only ata 100 and it never came up with the "WARNING: ATA drive claims FLUSH CACHE EXT feature support but does not claim extended LBA feature support" it skipped that but did the rest and hung on waiting for root device.

anyone got any ideas?

1 thing i did remeber , first time i tried using dd in windows to copy the vmware image to hard drive i messed up and copied it to my sata drives in raid0 , now it didnt copy like it should as i had a problem with the rar files so instead of the message when it finishes the dd saying 6341 or whatever number it is it said 1463 or something similar. when i rebooted i got the darwin screen but everytime i hit enter to boot it just went back to the darwin loading screen. ive tried lots of times to dd to my maxtor drive and it completes like every guide says but has never even showed me the darwin boot screen , most i get is b0 error?

is my maxtor drive {censored}?

maybe ill stop using raid 0 and try 2 single sata drives
