I have been trying to figure out why you would ever use the NTSC profile while color correcting photo's that will be displayed on televisions. Some co-workers of mine are obsessed with the issue, but cannot give me any reason to do it other than "Do it, because I said." - Anyone got any links or know off the top of your head why you would ever want to do this?

Well the profile is for when you have a properly calibrated monitor... the profile adjust the colors so the screens gives you an accurate view of what would be on NTSC TVs. The Color correction compresses the image and actually alters the colors of the file. The profile only works on profiled apps and calibrated monitors.
