Hi all, I hope someone can help out a OSx86 noob!

I'm trying to install JaS's 10.4.8 on an IBM Thinkpad T41. During the installer I get an error saying "There were errors installing the software" when it tried to install the Migration Toolkit, and my only option was to restart.

On the configuration page I unticked the printer drivers and the additional languages. I ticked the Intel option as the laptop has a Pentium M (SSE2). No other options were ticked.

I have already searched this forum but could not find a conclusive answer. I have gone in to the Terminal and checked /Volumes/OSX/var/log/install.log but there was nothing helpful in there. I have also tried this on a Dell Latitude D620 and got exactly the same error at the same point.

Any thoughts as to what I can do?

TIA

I should add that I also got the SAM Multimedia read/write error while installing to this machine with a CDRW/DVD combo drive. I swapped it for a plain DVD-ROM and this error went away. Could it be that I have used an incompatible medium, or the installer doesn't like the IDE controller on my Thinkpad?

I have just installed this in VMWare so I can confirm my ISO is ok. I suppose this must be a media problem then! Is there a recommended brand?

Verbatims always worked well for me. I got tired of seeing the "error installing" message myself on my desktop (works great on my laptop though), so I used the VMware approach. Partition the HD. Install through VMware in Windows directly to the REAL partition on the REAL HD you set aside for OSX. Then, reboot your system, using something like Acronis OS Selector to boot off that partition and you have OSX running natively.

My only problem right now is that it works fine in VMware, but is a bit unstable in Native.

Thanks for the hint! I hadn't thought of installing it from within VMWare on to a real partition then actually booting the machine. I found a stack of DVD-Rs, one of which was a Sony. The installer is in the final stages as I'm writing this so I'll know within minutes whether it worked 0_o

Well it worked :pirate2: I've now got OSX on my T41

So for the benefit of others who are searching for an answer to this problem (and found the other threads with no solution), the answer is not to use cheap crappy media! I used a Sony "DVD-R Ver.2.0/1x-8x", burned with Sonic RecordNow. There was no option for speed so I suppose it burned at the maximum speed.
