freebsdx
Hi everyone. I am using the Jas.10.4.8 dvd for both intel and amd. My box uses the NForce4 chipset and Sempron 2800+ cpu and Westdata IDE harddisk. Then everything works. However,I found a really annoy problem. My hard disk made lots of noise when I am using the os x. But it is really quiet under the linux and windows. I am seeking for the answer to this question. Some one told me the S.M.A.R.T isn't enabled by this situation. So I am wondering whethter the fact is that or not. Can someone here give me a answer? If the truth is that , then How can I enable the SMART function? Any help is appreciated, thank you in advanced. Sedna
S.M.A.R.T. stands for Self Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology, and it has nothing to do with your hard disk noise level (unless you are facing an expected failure of your drive, but I doubt this). Here is a brief description on S.M.A.R.T. from Bresink Marcel's site: It is an industry standard introduced in 1992 to react earlier on hard disk failures. A hard disk supporting the S.M.A.R.T. standard monitors itself with its own micro processor and allows the operating system to request information if technical parameters have changed in such a way that the hard disk might become defective in the near future. In this case the hard disk can be replaced before any data is lost. I'm not quite sure whether it can be turned ON or OFF, but i think you can't. It's ON by default as long as your controller (via drivers), your HDD itself, and your Operating System supports that function. freebsdx
You are right. From the technique aspect, the S.M.A.R.T doesn't relate to my hard disk noise. But I am wondering wherer the noise comes from . For my hard disk works really quietly under the Windows, linux and FreeBSD. I have tested that again and again.
