No other distribution has had so many derivatives (including Ubuntu). No other distro supports eleven architectures and gives you so many packages out of the box. Debian might not be the most newbie friendly distro out there (you must manually install proprietary drivers for NVIDIA and ATI, proprietary plug ins, multimedia support for "illegal" formats: encrypted DVDs, WMP...), but it is well worth learning.
