Ok... I have an hp dv9287cl laptop.

Specs:

Dual core centrino

2 gig ram

2 125 gig SATA drives

Geforce go 7800 w/256 megs ram (dedicated, not shared)

usual suspects of internal peripherals.

Now I know I'm probably going to have to use an external USB drive to load osx on, my question is what image should I use?

I'm assuming you mean a DVD image.

First of all, why an external drive? If you have the time, it might be wise to partition of one of those two 125gig drives, and follow one of the Genious Bar's guides on multi-booting Windows/OS X. Not only is it easier then lugging around an external drive for OS X, but will be faster as well.

Then again, if you're simply looking to try out OS X, an external drive is a good place to start. You might want to try getting one of JaS's 10.4.8 bootable install DVD's, and giving that a try.
