cant find boot device

Okay I have toshiba satellite m115-1061.

When i place the boot cd in the computer, it stops at Synaptics touch pad, then "waiting for root device."

However, if I plug in my external dvd burner through the USB port, it picks up the boot device- and finishes loading- however, now I can not see my hard disk in the disk utility.

My boot priority is set up for- cd/dvd> usb> fdd> lan> hdd. SO it SHOULD find the CD before it goes to the hard drive.

 

I was wondering if there was a way to set up the laptop- so that it is able to continue to boot with the cd. That way I do not need to plug in the USB burner, and boot soley through the laptop.
