Hello All,

First post here. Have trawled the forum and the web to find answers, and have got a lot of them. But after a few days constant experimenting (I'm a newby), I just can't get success with my Radeon 9550.

Here are my specs:

JaS 10.4.8 (native install)

Intel P4 2.80HT

1Gig Ram

ATA Drive (Seagate)

ASUS P2-800E MB

ATI Radeon 9550 256

CRT Monitor

My main issue is that I can't get a resolution above: 1024x768x32@85, or get QE/CI support, despite having read that others have, with a similar setup.

I first tried Callisto (3/5/6/8), following the setup instructions exactly. I have also added my monitor's EDID string to Callisto, as well as the ATI device ID 0x4153. Callisto 5 is the only one that worked.

I have done a Chown root:wheel/Chmod 755 and cleared the com.apple.window/com.apple.pref files, and cleared the extension.mkext/extension.kextcache files after each change.

I can get my resolution up to 1026x768x32@85, but it goes a lot higher on Windows, with the same hardware.

After I got Callisto set up, I tried adding my device ID to the ATIRadeon9700 files, and linking them up with Callisto, but this locks up the system. It freezes on boot, during the grey apple logo screen/spinning wheel.

If I boot into single user mode and remove the ATIRadeon9700.kext file, and continue to boot, there are no issues.

I'm out of options now, because I've followed all the instructions I could find on the forum here (thanks all ;) ), and I'm sure it is possible to get it working, but I just don't know what to try next.

I'd really appreciate it if anyone has any ideas of what I could try.

Cheers

Hello again,

Hope that someone might have a workaround or alternative. Has anyone had success with an alternative to Callisto? Is there such an alternative?

Is it possible to "force" your card to display a resolution/refresh rate you know it can support, without using Callisto?

Cheers...

I came across this, which might help some people in the same situation as me.

Aparently, the 9550 is very easily modded into a 9600pro, and the 9600pro seems to work a bit better with osx86.

There's a good post here all about the 9600 under osx86:

The thing is, i have decided not to take the risk, although others have reported success. I'm hanging out that someone will have some suggestions for me.

I've also tried AGPGART in the meantime, that also did not work.

Cheers.
