In this post I cover my work on progress installing 10.4.8 on a Samsung X05.

I used the Jas Intel AMD Beta 2 image. The first part was smooth as it can be: insert the DVD, boot and follow the installation steps (for simplicity, I made a clean install, wiping the contents of the hard disk)

Once installation finished, I rebooted the laptop. The boot menu allowed me to start OS X, but I had to face the "frozen-grey-disk" problem. It seemed to be the loginapp crash problem (see http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=38932 for details), but... I booted with the mach_kernel from the DVD and it solved! From there I installed the intel 10.4.8 pkg included on the DVD and the "frozen-grey-disk" problem was solved (I think it has to do with the semthex kernel that the package installs, but still I don't see the connection with the loginapp..). By the way, it also fixed my audio problem (the AC97 sound chip integrated on my laptop was not properly recognized) and my USB problem (USB pendrives were not recognized)

Now I have a working OS X on my laptop! Thanks Jas for all his work, the image I used has almost everything you should need, and almost works from the box (except the little detail I mentioned above)

Things to do:

* the ethernet card is not recognized (it's an Intel Pro/100 VE). I found the post http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=14840 with the AppleIntel8255x.kext.zip, which I hope it will fix it. Until then, I'm using the second partition of the hard disk to feed files to the computer.

* CoreImage and Quartz Extreme are disabled. I'm afraid this is due to a video card driver issue. The laptop comes with an Intel Extreme Graphics 2 card, which I think belongs to the Intel 915 family. I saw some promising JaS packages in the DVD: Intel900GM and Intel950GM. I hope one of them will address this issue.

* wireless card: Intel Pro wireless 2200bg. It seems hard to find a driver for it (see http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=36976); luckily for now it's not a priority to me.

Congratulations to JaS and thanks to all the people who contributed to get OS X on our PCs.

Networking: The AppleIntel8255x.kext.zip package worked perfectly.

Graphics card: At boot time the OS tried to use the Intel 950 extension, reporting a mismatch. I edited the PCI info (ioPCIMatch PCI_ID/Manufacturer) to meet my card specs but still was not recognized.

Then I tried the Intel 915 extension. Initially another mismatch, but after editing the PCI info in the Contents/Info.plist file the extension recognized the card, while still refusing to work with a "unusable display" message. So no CoreImage and no QuartzExtreme.

Anyway the performance is quite good. Common tasks go like a charm (even media playback), with the exception of the screen saver, sooooooo slow. I think this has to do with OpenGL, which is a no-no with my current lack-of-driver state (well, actually I think is kind of emulated by software, and hence the poor performance)

Xbench results are not too bad. Quartz 85.7, OpenGL 37.58, User Interface 191.8, and disk 31.62 (raw disk performance is similar to Windows: 22MB/s in sequential read/writes)
