Problem installing to hard drive

I've been using the guide at http://xplodenet.com/ and i got it to install in VMware with no problems and now I'm trying to install it on my extra hard drive.

 

My problem is when I get halfway through step 5

1 to install it on first HD > 2 to partition the HD manually > (skip this y if it says fdisk) y to initialize the partition table > Type the commands below:
auto hfs (ignore output message)
update
write
quit
Then just type Y or Yes and follow through until it gives you an error and reboots

 

I get this error message right after i say yes to destroy all information on the drive to install Darwin.

 

Operation on file "\\.\PhysicalDrive1" failed (The drive cannot find the sector requested.).
If disk "\\.\PhysicalDrive1" resides on a remote filesystem, please make sure your network connection and the server where this disk resides are functioning properly.
The current session will terminate.
VMware Workstation cannot sync with disk before abort. Disk \\.\PhysicalDrive1 may be inconsistent.

 

Anyone have any idea what is causing this and how I can fix it?
