Unable to update Bluetooth firmware

just purchased an Apple wireless keyboard.

 

When I launch the 'Bluetooth Firmware Updater' included on the software CD, it sits there with a stationary barberpole progress bar and 'Status' reads idle. When I click on the 'Update' button, I get a dialog saying "Missing Firmware. This version of the updater is missing the firmware file. Cannot proceed." When I quit the updater, it says "Firmware Update Failed. The Bluetooth firmware has not been updated successfully."

 

I tried to download a fresh copy of the updater from Apple's website and ran it with the same result. What is going on here?

OK. Here is the fix (called apple and this is what they got me to do).

This was all done on a macbook purchased new about a week ago, running 10.4.9

Shutdown your mac.

Turn off Apple Wireless Keyboard

Restart.

Go into system preferences

Hardware > Bluetooth

Devices > Set up a new device

Click continue on Introduction screen.

Now, click keyboard BUT DO NOT click continue yet.

Turn your apple wireless keyboard back on and wait for the green indicator light to start flashing (means it's discoverable). Once it is flashing you may click continue on the Bluetooth Setup Assistant. It should find it in a few seconds (under 45)

 

This worked perfectly for me. It for some reason seemed that the keyboard had to be discoverable before searching for it.

 

Note: The Apple Tech told me that Applications > Utilities > Bluetooth Firmware Updater is only for ibook, powermacs... etc key point being NOT macbooks.
