e-rick
Hi, My system is working quite great. OSX is running brilliantly......most of the time. There are still two things that annoy me. 1. Sometimes. when I'm booting the screen goes blank and I have to reboot...sometimes even 2 or 3 times to really get in to OSX. I'm guessing it has someting to do with NAtit and Usb drivers (mostly happens when something changed in the arrangment of connected USB-devices, f.e. usb harddisk was connected last shutdown, but at next boot isn't) This is annoying, but I can live with it, 2. This is much worse. The system randomly freezes. Sometimes it bothers to show me the gray screen with the 'press power button' message, most of the time it is just frozen. I suspect firefox is doing some evil things (crashes mostly occur while using firefox) . But i'm not sure. Anyone with the same symptoms and solutions. I cant seem to fix this. Not using firefox helps, but I like firefox.. well I like google browser sync.. and I'd like to keep on using it. What could be the problem. Memory-banks not working too great? Firefox not completely Universal after all? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/44414-firefox-freezes-my-osx/ Share on other sites
king_kilr
Hrm, that sounds awfully weird. Try using the Camino browser, it is also from Mozilla and built around the same code I believe, so that would give a good idea of whether it is a problem with the browser. tidalpassion
Aside from problems with corrupt preferences, permissions issues, or directory damage, bad RAM can cause all sorts of nasty problems. If the BIOS RAM timing settings, or the rate the RAM is clocked at are too demanding for the speed the memory at the voltage it is running at, that'll cause problems too. Bad memory is always a possibility, those experimenting with overclocking are more likely to encounter limits while finding stable settings. Check your RAM. Ubuntu (a very popular Linux distribution) is downloadable for many platforms. You can get a CD disk image either by direct download or through use of a bittorrent file (get it from the official Ubuntu site). Ubuntu can boot directly from the CD without altering any drives in the system. (drive needs to be supported as a boot device in the BIOS, and it seems it needs to be recognized as Master as well, you might need to use a PS/2 keyboard, and old G3 iMac USB keyboard didn't work when I tried it). The reason I bring up Ubuntu, it the CD goes through a boot-manager. If you hit the escape key just as it starts to boot from the CD, besides the option of what kernel to boot from you're give the option of testing memory. The memory test is FAR better than what any machine does at startup. Let it run for hours or overnight. It'll use many different test patterns and help you rule out memory problems. I don't think Disk Utility can check/repair file system damage unless you're booted from the (patched) OS X installer DVD or another hard drive) (I haven't done it yet, but I later plan to set up my machine to dual boot Ubuntu and OS X. It's never done Windows, and hopefully never will) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/44414-firefox-freezes-my-osx/#findComment-318647 Share on other sites
e-rick
I'm trying Firefox in a different language now.. . seems to be stable (knocking on wood right now). I was using a Dutch version, now i've got the English one. Just might be some lazy programmer just pasted language-dependent files from old PowerPC firefox into the Universal one... I was thinking about memory because Firefox is memory hungry and I'm using relatively old DDR memory in my PC, working in dual channel, even though they aren't from the same manufacturer and stuff... If it's not lazy programming I'll try the Ubuntu memtester.. Thanx! king_kilr
Or google "Memtest86" and run it from either a floppy or a CD, that will be a lot easier then downloading an entire OS. e-rick
I've got Ubuntu here.. been using it before i switched to hackintosh. (XGL-Compiz on an AMD Athlon box) so that won't be a problem. . But it actually seems to be working after I installed a different language version of firefox....really very strange.. king_kilr
That is pretty strange, like I suggested earlier try Camino, it is designed from teh group up for OS X so it may work better with the language packs. Immortal LuD
Not to bring up a dead thread, but I can't get FireFox to run for more than a few minutes without crashing my system running 10.5.2!!! Too bad I guess, because it has a great look to it unlike Safari!
