I've been experiencing random boot failures on 10.4.8. With Natit installed (GF 7300 GT) everythings works just fine except for one: just after the grey apple splash screen OSX initiates Natit (at least I suppose it does) and for a few seconds DVI/D-Sub output is empty ("check your cable connection, yadda yadda"). That's normal - after a while I'm in OSX.

The problem is, from time to time my computer hangs up in that stage. After a short while the monitor gets into standby-mode. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Try -v at the loadup thing. Verbose mode.

I've seen natit fail to reboot at times on my 7600GT, but I'm not running that machine in OS X anymore.

That's so weird...mine just started doing that today too! But I was using NVidiaEFI 1.0.2. it worked ilke a charge before that. Switched back to 1.0.1 with no problems since...

New edit...

Still doing it. The only thing I can think of is that I installed a new PS (Ultra X-finity 500W to replace an antec TP 380W). But I can't imagine why that has anything to do with it.

And booting with -v does nothing, it still hangs at the blue screen, then monitor off...blue screen, then monitor off...rinse and repeat.

Judging by this: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=44393 and more people reporting this issue that seems to be a common error :)

But what's weird is that I've never heard of this problem until I started having it 2 days ago! Before that everything worked flawlessly. Maybe a hidden line of code to self-destruct on March 1?

It could be PSU related. With improper voltages etc, it could cause problems. This is very unlikely with OSX86 though.

Natit says something about finding monitor, or finding videocard, or something, and a message like "cross your fingers", and then "Success!". I had thought the problem could be there. -v is verbose mode, but the problem could happen after the GUI is started. Try booting into -s (singleusermode) and checking the logs at /var/log. Syslog and console. You might find the problem. Console.app will have those, but there'll be more stuff from the latest boot.

So weird thing...I only have this problem when starting my comp cold. After trying to boot a few times and letting it get warm(er) inside the case, it starts up fine with either loginwindow.app (10.4.8 and 10.4.5)

What makes me think this is the problem is that I have read at macvidia that some people have been having this trouble after installing QT 7.1.5 and having a problem with loginwindow.app. However, I have a mirrored install on a PATA drive (without updating to 7.1.5), and it suffers from the same problem.

So...yeah, I'm gonna try swapping my PS this weekend to see if that's the issue...

I said I had the problem after the update :( I have had this happen after working in safe mode for a while and I've had it happen from hard resets. I have no problems with my PSU and don't think bad voltage would cause login window to fail. It hasn't really been a big problem for me but this has popped up enough to be questioned.

Edit: I dont use Natit, I'm on Titan now.

Well, I ended up doing some experiementing....and sure as shine-ola, it was the new PS causing the problem. Damn Ultra...guess I'll stick with Antec from now on

I also have this same problem. I have a Chieftec 400W PSU and 7600GS and 3 SATA hard drives. Can anyone else confirm that it is indeed the PSU that prevents OSX to boot properly sometimes? If that's the case, should I stick with 400W PSU from a different brand (Enermax, Antec?) or should I upgrade to a higher output PSU (450W, 500W)?

It is most unlikely the PSU, but I'll post buying recommendations since few people know about the PSU.

I don't know the brand Chieftec. Wattage is not important unless you do SLI with crazy videocards and many hard drives. If you search google for "powersupply calculator" and use what you find, you'll probably need something under 200w. PSU quality is more important, so I like Enermax. I also like modular PSUs and ones with large fans (120mm or 140mm). Efficiency is probably the most important number for a PSU since it reduces heat and power usage; go for something above 80% efficiency.

Most likely the problem has something to do with the way natit/titan gets the card to work. I imagine that it is unlikely there will be a replacement for either until MacEFIx86 releases.

Well, for those who are experiencing this same problem, I want to tell you it CAN be due to the PS. Here's what I did...

From cold boot, one after another

1) Comp + Ultra X-finity = NO boot

2) Comp + Antec TP 380 = Boot

3) Comp + Ultra X = NO boot

4) Comp + Antec TP 380 = Boot

I was also having problems with USB devices getting power with the Ultra X-finity as well. No such problems with the Antec.

So it's not about wattage, since the 380 works like a charm, while the 500 sucks monkey nutters. And it can't be about amperage either, since the Ultra (500W) has dual rails on whatever line is most important (it escapes me at this very moment).

So if you're having this problem, try a different PS, it can be the difference.

On my system (Dell XPS400 AKA Dimension 9150) with an 7800 GTX card I have similar problems:

Sometimes the screen turns black during boot (no signal on DVI) , sometimes the screen will be initialized in VGA (640x480) mode and no login prompt came up (but the mouse is visible).

Only every third or fourth reboot the system came up without problems.

Whenever the screen turns black the system can be switched off with the power off hotkey so I believe only the initialization of the graphics card failed but the system is up an working. When the screen turns blue (VGA mode) the system ignores any keyboard input but the mouse is moveable - it looks like the driver hangs or loops infinitely.

It seems to be a problem of titan/natit extension. Sometimes it fails, sometimes it crashes, sometimes it hangs or loops when switching on the graphic mode. I didn't find a regularity.
