vedanta
Hello, I had installed Mac OS X 10.4.6 8I1119 (with the 10.4.1 kernel) from a DVD installation image some months back. Recently I started Software Update, and it showed 2 updates that require a restart: # QuickTime 7.1.3 49.7 # Mac OS X Update Combined (Intel) 10.4.8 300MB Earlier I had seen many posts warning not to install updates that require a restart, because it can break the installation. Today I searched for the above updates to see if the updates were safe to install. I found QuickTime 7.1.2 is better and decided not to update to QuickTime 7.1.3. But I am confused if I should install the 10.4.8 update. Is if safe to install the 10.4.8 update? Thanks in advance Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/44242-should-i-update-8i1119-to-1048/ Share on other sites
enoree
NO, it will update your kernel with a native mac version and you will not be pleased with the result Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/44242-should-i-update-8i1119-to-1048/#findComment-316664 Share on other sites
vedanta
How do I update to 10.4.8 then? Which patches will I need and where are they? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/44242-should-i-update-8i1119-to-1048/#findComment-316712 Share on other sites
consolation
It IS safe, but before rebooting replace appleSMBIOS.kext and replace the kernel with the latest hacked version - you can even use one of the automated scripts to do that. Repair permissions THEN reboot. vedanta
Thanks a lot. I am not interested in using automated scripts, so I will try to search for the latest version of appleSMBIOS.kext and the kernel in this forum. I am really glad to know I can install the update, as it will save loads of time looking for other methods to update. Is the latest hacked version of the kernel still 10.4.4? I was out of touch with osx86 for many months, so forgive me if I am wrong. vedanta
Hello consolation, By "replace appleSMBIOS.kext" do you mean I should replace it with the file that's already there in my computer, or download a new appleSMBIOS.kext? I am still trying to find appleSMBIOS.kext but while searching for the kernel, I saw that the 10.4.8 beta9 or 10.4.9 kernel is the latest hacked kernel. But it seems that this is a very new version and should be installed only after 10.4.8 is installed. Well I am quite confused which kernel I should replace with. Can anybody give me a link to the latest kernel which can be safely installed in my installation? Thanks in advance.
