Tried the steps in wtcnbrwndo4u's post (using 10.4.3 kext in a 10.4.8 install), but it did not work for me. I get these errors during kextload:

$ sudo kextload -v /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext

kextload: extension /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext appears to be valid

kextload: loading extension /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext

kextload: loaded version 2.6.1 of module com.apple.iokit.IOUSBFamily differs from requested version com.apple.iokit.IOUSBFamily

kextload: unable to register module with kernel

kextload: a link/load error occured for kernel extension /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext

load failed for extension /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext

(run kextload with -t for diagnostic output)

Any ideas on how to get more from that link/load error message?

I also saw this message in 'dmesg':

AppleHDA.kext failed to load: unable to locate 'layout-id' property.

I'll give it a go. 2 questions though.

1) Which version of AppleHDA kext files do I use - the 10.4.8 ones or the 10.4.3 ones I just installed.

2) What files are modified by this patcher? Just ones in the AppleHDA kext? Or are there other files too? Point is, if it doesn't work for me, I don't want it to leave my system in a state such that I won't be able to try other processes for getting audio to work.

Well, I tried it and it didn't work. I grabbed codec_Sigma9220.txt from the webpage and the patcher gave no errors. I rebooted and still no sound and no devices listed in SysPrefs.

How do you dump the linux codec? I did a quick search but didn't see how. Maybe if I dump one from my linux machine I'll get different results.

Ok, I dumped the audio codec from linux:

Codec: SigmaTel STAC9221 A1

Address: 0

Vendor Id: 0x83847680

Subsystem Id: 0x102801ab

Revision Id: 0x103201

...

Although, I could not play sounds in linux. Not sure if that matters since the linux did create the code#0.

Anyway, I ran this codec through the patcher and it still does not work. Tried running it through a 10.4.3 kext with no luck as well.

Any more ideas?

Even after all my attempts, the device never shows up in SysPrefs. If I have my speakers plugged into the wrong port, would it still say there's no device detected? In other words, does the sound card detect that speakers are not hooked up to the port therefore tells OS X that it can't detect the device?
