not sure if this has been discussed before, but i figured out how to fix my built-in ethernet (pci card) when it shows a self assigned ip address, and renew doesn't want to work.

When I'm using XP and I'm ready to quit XP, I have to go to a commandline and do a:

ipconfig /release

Then shutdown. When I bootup to OS X, the buit-in ether picks up a proper IP address from my linksys firewall/router device. If I forget to do this, OS X cannot get an IP address.

This is on my jas 10.4.8. system with the 10.4.6 samba patch

as well as the viarhine.kext from pinxue to make my pci card work.

(as a matter of fact, this might have been the problem with my nforce4 onboard ethernet come to think of it...)

don't know why osx can't grab an ip, after using windows xp, but ubuntu does not have the same trouble (triple boot machine).

oh well, no big deal. i might create a windows shutdown script to release the ip address.

yes, they are interesting quirks. which is half the fun! <_<

so i confirmed that forcedeth.kext loads and my onboard ethernet shows up in the control panel, and dhcp always ends up with a self assigned ip, regardless of what i do in windows. (hard code ip don't work either)

so i'll stick to my pci nic using viarhine.kext (don't remember what card it is, i got it from officedepot for $14)

i created a shutdown script in xp using gpedit.msc, and the script just says

start "" c:\windows\system32\ipconfig.exe /release

so now os x always get's an ip and i don't have to manually release in xp, and i can reboot or shutdown from xp.
