Hi Folks,

Use a real Mac as a desktop box, but have an aging Windows laptop (see below) which I'd quite like to dual boot with MacOSX on the odd occasion. Wouldnt be used regularly enough for me to spend the cash on an iBook or MacBook at the moment.

I've a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo D7800 Laptop, spec as follows:

* Pentium 4, 2.4ghz (believe this supports the SSE2 instruction set)

* Radeon Mobility M6 (believe this is a 9700), 15" TFT @ 1024x768

* 768mb RAM

* 40gb Hard Disk

Have a JAS 10.4.6 disk.

Have been through the Mac OS-X install a couple of times, everything seems to go fine (OK, so i've worked few a few teething problems, but nothing major), until I reboot to get into the OS, at which point I get.

* Grey background, apple logo, spinny thingy underneath it (i.e. standard Mac OS X boot screen)

* After a couple of mins, the spinny thing freezes, and i'm provided a black mouse pointer, but can do nothing else

I've left it here overnight, just on the off chance, but to no avail.

Package wise, I've tried with none of the non apple packages (which didn't do me many favours), with all the non-apple packages (result as above) and with only those I thought applied to my system (Intel decrypts patch, SSE2 patch, with and without the Radeon Mobility patch). All, again, to no real avail.

I now seek help from the experts! Anyone any suggestions?

In reverse order then...

2) Had done quite a lot of googling, searching here, etc over the past week or so, to little avail

1) was hanging before showing anything useful

however...

Tried a 10.4.8 JAS dvd, and have....... the same result, only a little more useful info.

Normal boot still results in the hang @ grey apple, however:

* Booting in verbose mode (-v):

* It's hanging at "Loading Login Window" (which I've found other posts about)

* Booting in safe mode (-x):

* Boot completes and I can use the system, though obviously, not in a great state

I'm going to look into the ATI/NVidia driver removal (think I'll move, to be safe) stuff found in another post. Will report back.

OK,

the following commands seem to have done the trick:

* Boot MacOS into safe mode (-x)

* Bring up a terminal

* cd /System/Library

* sudo mkdir _Extensions

* cd Extensions

* sudo mv ATI* ../_Extensions

* sudo mv NV* ../_Extensions

* sudo mv GeForce* ../_Extensions

* Reboot

I'm now in MacOS X 10.4.8, normal user mode, in native (1024x768) resolution. Stability of the system, etc all TBC.

Regards,

G.
