Well, I don't know if such application exists for OS X 10.4.8 on a beigebox PC (and I don't think it does), but... is there anything that would display my core and motherboard chip temperature and also let me control the speed of my computer's coolers?

Always taking into account that I'm not using an Intel Motherboard nor an Intel CPU :angel:

Have you tried this program yet for temperature monitoring

You can also add the fn=x flag which is known to help performance for some people.

"fn" stands for "forcenap" and provides different implementions for handling CPU idle time with the goal of CPU heat/fan control.

There are six values:

fn=0

fn=1

fn=2 : uses CPU instructions "monitor/mwait" (will crash on SSE2 CPUs)

fn=3 : original implemention of the previous Mac OS X x86 builds. Some users noted, that this option gives the fastest system.

fn=4 : uses CPU instructions "monitor/mwait" (will crash on SSE2 CPUs)

<key>Kernel Flags</key>

<string>fn=3</string>

Thank you! I'll try downloading that app.

Those two XML nodes are supposed to go in com.apple.boot...? I'm not sure where they go and I can't even remember the boot configuration file name :)

Which value do you recommend? 3?

Edited by thunder.scripts

It goes in your com.apple.boot.plist found in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/

You can test each value by typing fn=3 or what ever # you want to try at the Darwin boot prompt before you set it permanently in your boot file. I recommended that you do this because once you enter it in your boot file it's hard to remove should it not work. I use fn=3 because I have a SSE2 CPU

Well... XBench gave me almost identical results with all values, so I left it at 3.

What did make a difference was deleting AppleThermal.kext and enabling Cool n Quiet in the BIOS. Maybe it's just me, but I think coolers have been quieter since then.

Thanks!
