jurist Posted February 23, 2007 Share Posted February 23, 2007 (edited) I have an Imac g5 20'. I would make a clean install and deleted all using windows vista dvd. And I bought a Tiger 10.4.6 install Dvd to make a clean install. But now I can´t boot in to hard disk and even with the install Dvd. The only thing that cames up is a folder icon with question mark. I tried holding C key, reset PRAM, but nothing worked. I can only boot from Windows Vista dvd. Please help, I wanna use my Imac. sorry my english.. tuxuser33 Posted February 23, 2007 Share Posted February 23, 2007 (edited) Am I right? You wonna try install Windows on G5? Never heard befor. What are you doing with a Windows$$$ drive in aG5? Vista boots a IBM Power-PC? Your G5 should look like this: (Note, without iSight! Else you own an Intel-Mac.) Try holding the ALT-Key at power-on until the selector appears. As long as you have a working OSX-partition you can boot there from. Better you look in your manual for reset the parameter-ram. Alternatively you can enter OpenFirmware by pressing some keys. There you can eject the DVD by typing a line like "eject /dev/dvd". If this fails try the hard way. If it is a real iMac remove the cover (backplate), remove the Airport-card, remove the battery for a while. This will reset stored settings to default. Reinstall using Disk Utility from the 10.4.6 disk- hold option at startup until you see a selection. Pick the OS X install dvd. No problem , pull the wire out of plug. Power ON ,CD1 inserted. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ FMO: Don't beleave this is a real iMac. Or not a real Mac-user. Maybe a fake or the hole story is {censored}. edit: should not say hard words. would be banned. If a iMac G5 you can boot your shiped CD1 (OSx 10.4.1 or later for PPC). Does Apple sold OSX-DVD (Intel-code) for Intel-Macs sepearately? Why should they do? Every new Mac comes with one (or 2 CD-ROM) and the PPC-Mac's cannot run with it. Actually, Apple doesn't even sell Tiger as x86, all the boxed versions are PPC at the moment. 10.4 Server is a Universal OS, meaning that it will run on both PPC and Intel, however it does so through a PPC Essencials package that has the PPC-Specific stuff. As far as Vista booting on PPC, it is not complete BS, but close. While I was working at Microsoft, one of my friends over in Build was experimenting with the Xbox360 OS (Windows 2000 for PPC), and replacing a ton of resources with PPC Compiled Vista WinPE components. What this gave you was a command line and a desktop (no explorer or programs). Even there, most commands did not work, some resulting in a dead lock (like "dir"). Getting back on point: What was most likely the case is that jurist formatted with his OS X disk, set the partition type to MBR, and then is trying to boot Vista as though he had an x86 machine. Although, if he were to put in his OS X DVD (a PPC one, not Intel one) then he would be able to boot into the installer and get a working system again. My english is bad, i know that. Therefore I COULDNT explain the situation. I did not understand the half of your answers... And it's right I'm not a mac geek. Tuxuer33 --> My Imac dont look like your picture. I have isight built-in. so It's an intel-mac. Sorry. tuxure33 says :"As long as you have a working OSX-partition you can boot there from. " I dont have it. Why would I give 129$ to buy a tiger install dvd if had one? I cant find my CD's that came with the Imac. And It was therefore I tried with Vista dvd. I just thought "maybe it will work" .And it worked. I could run Vista on Imac. So I tried everything. Finally I tried with Diskwarrior 4 bootable dvd. Booted from dvd but couldnt repair the hard disk. I have no working osx system on the machine. I have no working partition(I think) on the machine. I cant boot from the Tiger install Dvd. (Tried the hackintosh versions and vmware, but not worked) Maybe I just throw it out! Need help. thanks... You own a Intel-Mac, purchased a OSX-DVD which can and will not run with Intel-CPU (not binary code). Ask a friend or a local dealer for a CD. Or take your Mac (o.k. weight about 13kG) and go to a local dealer. He will serve you with CD for installation. May be you have to pay a fee. If not, does the Vista DVD show up when you hold "Option" at boot up? Did you remember to set your Partition Type to MBR when you started everything off? Vista can not boot from a GPT Partition Table. (Yes, I know that I just wrote Globally Unique Identifier Partition Table Partition Table, don't flame me because of it.) Sadly, at the moment you will need to set that from a working Mac or an OS X Installation Disk. The Windows installer does not have support for it beyond recognizing it, and I have yet to see it included on a Linux LiveCD. If you make an appointment at an Apple Store Genius Bar, then they will reinstall OS X for you from their discs, so I assume that they would just format the drive for you so that you could install Vista.
