In the beginning...my iMac took a second to display the Apple Logo on first startup and about maybe 5 seconds to start the twirling icon to appear. Then maybe another 3-5 seconds for it to finish and start-up my computer. NOW, it takes a while for the Apple logo to appear (like maybe 30 seconds to a minute) and the twirling to start about 10-20 seconds after that.

My guess to WHY this started is that I've been testing Boot Camp for a while and MAYBE in doing so, the Mac is continuously looking for another boot disk. My two assumptions to prove this are that: 1. Whenever there is a disk in the disk drive, the Mac keeps trying to read from it expecting something to boot from it. 2. Whenever my iPod is connected, the computer will not even boot unless I start up my Mac without it connected (this is a major problem).

I want to know if this is true and how to stop my Mac from looking through empty space for another drive that doesn't exist and just boot normally from the hard drive installed in the computer. Thanks for any help on this. If you need more info than this, just ask.

I don't know all that much about new macs with all the EFI and stuff since I don't have one, but you could check System Preferences and make sure the Startup Disk is your internal hard drive, not something else like try network booting or something.

Just a suggestion.

I know what you mean by a "?" Folder at start-up but no, it doesn't show it at boot. The only partition on my machine is the Macintosh HD but there's an option to Network Boot, however, that is not what the startup disk is selected as. I could try defragging but I don't know if there is software built in to the Mac to do so. If you know how to defrag on the Mac could you let me know? Thanks.

Also, yes, I had boot camp but I don't know if I "uninstalled" it. All there is is the Assistant to use. It is still there if I wanted to make a partition to install Windows XP.

I noticed in my STARTUP DISK the only option is Network Startup even though I have two (2) SATA 2 drives attached - any idea how to make that the start up disk, that is, my HD, and not the Network Startup....perhaps this is why I have slow boot times sometimes?

Thanks

  • 4 weeks later...

I had exactly the same problems after I removed the Window XP partition using the bootcamp assistance , my MBP takes 30 secs before the apple logo show up. I have been googling the web until I read this post, I got it fixed.

I still keep the bootcamp in my application folder, I simply just go to preference -> startup disk, select the Macintosh HD and restart (tho I was always booting into OSX directly), now it all back to normal, blazing fast.
