check17
Any success in using SPDIF output for a 6-channel surround sound with the AC97 ALC650 chip? I can obtain multichannel surround sound when using 3-cable analog connections, but only 2-channel sound when using an optical audio cable . My motherboard is Abit IC-7G with built-in ALC650 with in/out optical audio connections and analog 3-cable outputs. I am using the patched Jas OSx86 10.4.8 on a Pentium 4 3.2 GHZ with Logitech Z-680 speakers. Here are the steps I followed: 1. Booted with the Jas 10.4.8 DVD 2. Completely erased my previous OSx86 10.4.1 and did a clean install of 10.4.8 3. Verified permissions and rebooted 4. Click on SYSTEM PREFERENCES in the dock 5. Click on SOUND 6. For SOUND EFFECTS, make sure Play Alerts and Sounds is LINE OUT; For OUTPUT, select LINE OUT (AC97 audio (PCM)) 7. Close SOUND and SYSTEM PREFERENCES 8. Open APPLICATIONS/UTILITIES/Audio Midi setup 9. In PROPERTIES FOR, select second option (AC97 Audio PCM) 10. In AUDIO OUTPUT, select the followings: -SOURCE: LINE OUT -FORMS: 48000.0 and 6 ch-16 bit -click on CONFIGURE SPEAKERS, select multichannel and 5.1 SURROUND -test all your speakers -IMPORTANT: click APPLY before DONE. 11. Close Audio Midi setup. Voila, you're done. habsversucht
17 thanks Check for the quick answer. althought I doubt that I can follow your instruction 100% because my problem is, that I don_t see any recognised soundcard after the installation... all greyed out and left alone are my sound system preferences... (allthough, I have to update my signature, because phase26usb is now recognised after a usb-driver-update...) but at least I know now, that it#s not so much the ALC650 that troubles the AC97 kext, but the combination with via chipset or whatever it is connected to best, habsversucht Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/42614-alc650-6-channel-surround-sound-with-optical-audio-connection/#findComment-305248 Share on other sites

Wednesday 8th of July 2009... ? IF... I have succeeded... My reply is simply this... ONLY SIX? Wow... (ever since i was 12yrs old - in 1965) I have BEEN able to get seven channels of FULL surround. from that 3 "terminal" analogue speaker_cable (U use)... & am now easily extracting 9 & 10 channels... (same 3 wire "amplifier_output" cable)... AND... As my Company Profile "picture_logo" (here) has shown for many months now... I "am" theoretically able to extract 25 channels (and recently HAND_BUILT a "different" 16 ch unit) PLUS.... I know in theory- on a "flat" paddock (area) there is an amazing 16.47 MILLION available channels, PLUS - ??? In a (Megaminx_Type) full 3D "Sperical" Sound_Ball THERE ARE.... 64.77 MILLION available channels. (all accessible... ) via my QUIX - NZ methods of analogue Deplexer_Decoding FROM ANY STANDARD ... 2ch 3wire Amplifier AND? Ur worrying about (just) 6?
