Hi all,

Have got a wee problem with a fresh install of 10.4.8. Have searched this site (several times) and cant seem to find anyone who has solved my problem.

Basically it started with a 10.4.8 JaS Install (via burned media). Default GFX drivers worked (after removing gforce.kext since i have a nforce board), but when i loaded Natit, thats where it started.

It all booted fine (no panics when loading geforce et all kexts wayhay!), until it come to actually doing something.

In other words, it hangs on ;

Localhost /Services/Library/Coreservices/loginwindow.app has started.

Sometimes I can get a few lines of text related to my Eth card (forcedeath kexts), but they seem to be randomly either before or after, so Im not thinking that is significant.

So at this point I read up a bit, and went and got a copy of the Tubgirl version of 10.4.8. Installed that using the VMWare Native install (my DVD wont read Mac disks lol), and everything went well. Booted into VMWare mode, desktop came up. sweet i thought. Went to boot nativley first time, and was great when Titan found my GeForce 6800, but was angry when

.....loginwindow.app has started.

nothing.

Things I have tried, and outcomes.

JaS Disk;

Removing GForce.kext and its friends, forcing OSX to use default drivers - worked. Not bothered about the fancy extensions (though they would be nice), but i cant change the res to the 1680*1050 my monitor wants to loo good.

Tubgirl Disk;

Removed agpart.kext as one user said this worked for him - No different

copied out the loginwindow.app and replaced with the loginwindow_old.app located in the same folder (datestamped aug 06 i think) - noithing different.

copied out that loginwindow.app and replaced with the 10.4.5 loginwindow.app available for download here - again, nothing different.

Have tried DVI connection, VGA connection, heck both of them into same monitor (multiple inputs ftw). both halt at same place, no difference.

-v gives me more or less the same as normal (has anyone else noticed .8 spits out more text? i had .7 on another pc a while back, and it was all hidden by the nice grey screen lol

-s allows me to swap out app files. however continuing to boot to single user mode results in a hang. Now this is strange. There is no mention of loginwindow.app when it hangs. however, the other kexts loading when it hangs are the same set loading when loginwindow.app loads in normal mode.

Could it be that OSX is having a problem rendering the display, it just does something different last in normal and singleuser mode? I dont know, and im not savvy enough with macs to know how to find out lol.

Worth noting Tubgirl still working under VMWare fine!

Im at the end of my ideas, so its over to you guys. Any logs/info you want let me know, though I may need direct instructions on how to get them. First home hackintosh project, so im not exactly bright with macs yet (although I hope that I have done allright so far :( )

As always, TIA and lets see if we can get this sorted.

(PS Ive noticed a few other threads (in nowhere near enough description, hence the new one) from users with what sounds like a similar issue. Is it worth a 10.4.7 with Natit installed to see if it is .8, or the driver/my gfx itself?

PPS almost forgot, system specs;

CPU - AMD Skt 939 4800x2 (SSE Supported)

Memory - 3gb (well it posts as 2.8gb) DDR400 in Dual Channel mode.

Motherboard - DFI nforce 4 based motherboard (cant remember exact model atm).

GFX - PciX eVGA Nvidia 6800 256mb

HDD - 60gb IDE

Secondary HDDs - lots of SATA's (patching to make work)

VMWare version - 5.5.3

Host OS - Xp Pro SP2

PPS Attached a bad photo of the hang point under Tubgirl install.

TIA again :):P

download Jas ppfv1 and burn a new DVD install without Titan then if it boots u can install with titan and check.

P.S.: Had the same prob AMD 3200+ (939) Nforce 4 (6100 Nvidia builtin ) + 6600 Pcie exchanged it for sig now OSX much stable QE/CI onboard sound lan only thing not wrkn is my wireless :unsure: havent booted windows for a week now :hysterical:

Sorry, you lost me there fella.

Installing without Titan / Natit works fine (just no resolution change / extensions).

The moment I enable either. poof it hangs.

And I have thought about investing in some cheap Intel gear. Thing is I like my 4800x2 though lol :unsure:

Any more suggestions?

I know I know. Saying that the 4800X2 is SSE3 compat (running now actually), and the 6800 will work in qe/ci mode, its just getting it there!

Ok done (another) reinstall of the Tubgirl release, thjis time disabling the N40 support (6 series gfx). Worked fine, but no qe/ci and no resolution changing.

Quickie - is there anyway to "hack" the resolution so that I can set it higher whilst Im trying to figure it out? 1024*768 on a 23" widescreen is ugly.

As for the device ID's, I could do with someone running that through with me. I did initially do this under the JaS installed OSX, and I got the same results as the Tubgirl (which seems to have a autodetect GFX feature??)

Ta btw :unsure:

Just an update;

This is now working.

Beautiful 1680x1050x32 ...

with CI/QE!!!!

Had to use natit ( - the new edited one) and a set of kexts for nvidia acceleration i got from the demon of oid. Also had to manaully update NVx40.kext, NVRESx.kext and geforce.kext with my device id (as my chip is the N41 supposedly, not the N40). Also needed OpenGL installing out of the Update Combo 10.4.8 available from Mac.

Thanks to all who helped, especially the guy on IRC. Cant remember your name bud, and we still need to sort out that donation, so stand forward if you would!

Now just to straighten out some quirks.
