Many newbies to the forum get frustrated because its hard to receive feedback. I'm sure many of the same questions are asked over and over again, just like in most forums - but to be honest the solutions are not easy to find and many times unclear. After many attempts to install jas 10.4.7 and 10.4.8 I finally have it 4.8 running on an external USB HD. My original attempt to install 10.4.7 was on the 3rd partition of my internal HD. Install went well and was seamless. Upon reboot I got to the blue screen with the apple logo. The circle would spin for about a min, then the machine would freeze. My attempts to receive help on the board were ignored. I tried to reinstall three times and finally gave up. The next week I found a copy of 4.8. Again it seemed to freeze, but this time with vertical lines. I found a post suggesting I needed to use an external monitor. I did, but the system was still frozen. I tried to reinstall, this time with different custom settings. I was able to get rid of the vertical lines, but again it was frozen at the blue screen. I then tried an install on an external HD - same problem. I gave up again. I finally tried to install with VMware through XP. The system installed again, but froze in the same spot. I posted in the VMware section and Dong replied quickly suggesting to install without any of the graphics drivers. I had not tried this yet. It installed perfectly with his suggestion through VMware. After I found this to work, I decided to try the same set up on the external HD. The install was seamless and the reboot was perfect. Known issues: No sound No wireless - Intel 3945 Resolution stuck at 1024x768 No ethernet - Broadcom 440x - fixed with the IONetworkingFamily.kext from a previous version (10.4.3 I believe) XP was installed first, followed by Vista. Vistas boot loader is being used. I then installed 10.4.8 on the external HD. The big hangup that I was having was with the custom install options and specifically the x1400 graphics card. The ONLY custom option I installed was the intel pack. Everything else, including language and printers, were unchecked. Even though the options state there are drivers for ATI cards, they're incompatible with the x1400 and actually cause more problems then good. This is what causes the hang at start up. Install went really well. Upon reboot there was no need for an external monitor, it worked fine but at 1024x768 resolution. After installing I noticed my Broadcom 4400x ethernet wasn't working. I found a thread that had solutions for ethernet problems and replacing my kext solved the problem. I have yet to solve the resolution problem, but I know others have done it - I just have to find the threads again. Also the sound and wireless are problems that no one has been able to fix yet. As I solve stuff I'll update the thread. I know the e1505 is becoming a popular model so hopefully others can reference the thread along with other e1505 threads. dong
For x1400, you can only force the resolution in the startup file. Check my sigature for the method.
