Seekerr
Hi all, My motherboard (circa 2003, a gigabyte with an intel 875P chipset, the GA-8I875 / GA-8IK1100) uses, like so many others, the AC'97 onboard sound. Under OS X, this card works with no configuration, but with some peculiarities - it doesn't show up under "Built-in Audio", nor anywhere else....but it works. I'm not complaining about that. However, I have noticed that, particularly under VLC, sound appears to be using a substantial chunk of system resources, on the order of 30% of CPU time. On top of doing full software de-interlacing and mpeg-2 decoding, this is seemingly sufficient to top out the CPU while watching a DVD. My specs: JaS 10.4.8 using Semthex SSE2 kernel Pentium 4 "Northwood" 3.0 GHz (Hyperthreading, SSE, SSE2) AGP nVidia 7600GS 256mb (Dual monitors under Natit, QE/CI enabled, but perform poorly due to lack of AGPGart sucess) Gigabyte GA-8I875 / GA-8IK1100 2 x 512mb DDR1 PC3200 Kingston in Dual Channel mode Assorted IDE drives, all running on PATA. I think there's 2 x 80 and a 160. Lost track! Anyone else noticed/experienced this? Any ideas or solutions would be most welcome, along with any hints as to getting AGPGart working, so as to alleviate the CPU load and make it a non-issue! Thanks folks
Seekerr
Partially resolved by using Audio Midi Setup utility to set output mode to 48khz. Dropped CPU usage by substantial amount, and eliminated pops and crackles. I'd still appreciate any additional help, but at least now it's possible to work a bit and use audio at the same time.
