errandwolfe Posted February 9, 2007 Share Posted February 9, 2007 So I just got handed down to me this beautiful 21 inch Sony CRT flat screen monitor. The previous owner (whom I trust a great deal) said the monitor was working fine a few days ago. Well I hooked it up and the display seems rather washed out, no matter how I tweak the settings. Also on a black background you can see red and green stripes going diagnolly across the screen. The screen also has a tendency to flare for lack of a better word when there are major screen redraws. Normally I would assume that the monitor has gone bad. I seem to recall reading somewhere though that to power a large size monitor one usually needs a full on video card. Onboard video such as the GMA950 within my system might be incapable of properly running a display this large. Is that total BS? Could such a thing be true? Unfortunately I do not have another computer in the house with a video card, and lugging a 21 inch monitor up and down several flights of stairs is not fun. What does everyone think? My friend has a 21" inch too...and he runs it on a 64mb (el Cheapo) Geforce card. only drawback with less powerfull vga cards would be the resolution change...but then again..my 32mb pci card goes WAY beyond my 1280x1024 (which tells me it can easily run bigger monitors).. But hey..you'll never know..maybe im wrong aswell..but i doubt it.. Good luck ! blue_misfit Posted February 9, 2007 Share Posted February 9, 2007 Sounds like a bad monitor or VGA connector / cable to me. even 64mb is more than enough to display the max resolution of my monitor, which is also a Sony 21" Trinitron CRT. This doesn't mean that you will be able to run 3d applications at its max resolution, however.
