Hi ppl,

I did some testing with parallels. The problem that I encountered after trying the new RC2 was this error: error writing to sound device. The odd thing is that I KNEW sound worked before. But since I don't use Paralleles very often I couldn't remember what the situation was when I had sound e.g. which OSX version I had Parallels on since I recently installed a lot versions due to my testing with games, Radeon X1600 and 10.4.8. (See my previous post with more details).

Anyway. I discovered the following weird things.

But before going further I have to mention that my setup includes a Logitech webcam 4000 Pro. This webcam's mic is discovered as an audio-input device with 10.4.5 but NOT with 10.4.6 (JAS DVD... well well what-d-you-know). I thought this seemed rather insignificant since there are only drivers for 10.3.9 for this webcam (which also work on 10.4 BTW) and since I don't use this webcam very much either. How wrong could I be...

I discovered that if Parallels didn't find this audio-input device after initial installation (10.4.6). It always gives the error "error writing to sound device! Using loopback device instead". Parallels works fine (with audio) if I install on 10.4.5 which properly identifies this logitech USB webcam with mic. System preferences--> sound ---> finds an "unknown AUB audio Device" in 10.4.5 (input level even responds at noises) but finds nothing in 10.4.6?!?!?

It goes even further. If I upgrade 10.4.5 (which recognises the Mic from the USB webcam) to 10.4.7 then THAT version has parallels WITHOUT the "error writing to sound device! Using loopback device instead"-error.

BUT if I upgrade from 10.4.6 to 10.4.7 (or even 10.4.8) (which doesn't recognises the mic from the USB webcam) then I get that error.

As far as i can remember the 10.4.8 JAS intel SSE3 DVD that I tried before did recognise my USB webcam's mic as audio-input and hence had no "error writing to sound device" at that time (it had other problems offcourse) but I'm not sure.

So to the ppl who have this error.

Can they investigate whether their OSX recognises Audio-in (from an USB device)? Whether they have audio-in at install of their OSX and/or parallels? From which version they upgraded? Etc...

Anyway. I'm not going to re-install the bloody thing again. My conclusion is that (as I previously stated) 10.4.5 (I think what I have is Myzar DVD). Is the BEST version for systems like mine (P4 socket 775, 915 chipset, Radeon X1600pro-256). And with the trick to fool programs that it IS 10.4.8 we can get some apps installed on that version too which are suposedly 10.4.8-only. So ATM I'll stick to 10.4.5 on my system and apply the version.plist-trick

So far the problems I encountered with different versions and upgrade paths are

10.4.8 and Radeon X1600pro-2566 PCI-e: Games crash! It doesn't matter if they're full screen or in a window. The system just freezes.

10.4.7: Depending from which previous version I upgraded parallels has the "error writing to sound device"-fault

---> If upgraded from 10.4.5 then iSync doesn't work either!!!

------> If upgraded from 10.4.6 iSync works but parallels has the error

10.4.6: Parallels has the "error writing to sound device"-fault.

10.4.5: No errors at all. Parallels has proper audio, iSync works , BorisBadenov-3.2-drivers makes Radeon X1600pro-256 PCI-e work perfect (even for games).

These are the parallels version that I tried:

1848 - first release

1884 - some beta

1970

3036

3120 last beta with coherence etc...

3150

These the OSX versions

10.4.5 ---> Myzar DVD

10.4.6 ---> JAS DVD

10.4.7 -------> upgraded from 10.4.5 cripples iSync

10.4.7 -------> upgraded from 10.4.6 cripples Parallels (see above)

10.4.8 ----> JAS DVD Intel SSE3 re-seed. OpenGL games freeze

*10.4.8 ----> through manual update process: OpenGL games freezes

*10.4.8 ----> through easy upgrade (eGWan Intel.SSE3): OpenGL games freezes

*10.4.8 ----> depending on which version I upgraded from Parallels gives sound-error

These are the GFX-drivers that I tested

Borisbadenov_3.2.pkg ---> works fine upto 10.4.7: OK

ATI1x00-3.3.pkg ---> only tested in 10.4.6: OK

ATI1x00-3.5 ---> made for 10.4.8 doesn't work in prior versions: OpenGL games crash

ATI1x00-3.6.pkg ---> incomplete for X1600-cards. Aborts at installation

NATIT_uni_1.0.pkg ---> made for 10.4.8: OpenGL games crash

This is a rather comprehensive post but I hope that the involved parties find it usefull.

Regards,

Hey guys!!!!

Regarding the sound in Paralles, the solution is quite simple, I played a llitle with paralles and I just found it: In the machine seetings, sound setting you have to set the "Output Device" to "Default Audio" and "Input Device" to "Null Device", especially on a T60/T60p where the "input device" is not installed by Mac OS (jas).
