Tageri
Hey, I signed up becuase I hit a brick wall in that i\'ve got no dvd drive to burn from, or more importantly read from on the laptop i\'d like to install to. I\'ve tried the vmware route but unforntunately my cpu\'s a 1.6 dothan which has an issue with PAE in vmware and sussequently only gets to the apple logo before the installer crashes out. I\'ve got the JaS 10.4.6 image and i\'d like to natively install it on here but as you can understand i\'m a bit stumped as to how I go about it. I\'ve been googling for some kind of app that\'s able to emulate .iso\'s through the boot sequence (or something like that) but so far i\'ve found nothing. Am I doomed to be osxless on this machine do you think? EDIT: I just read a thread below about it - i tried doing the dd thing earlier but i kept getting errors in the command window about it not being able to find the image. I think what would be realy helpful is an explanation in simple terms about exactly what dd is, and how it functions, and how i utilise it to make osx install on my machine. All i've read about it so far (from the guide on the wiki site) is how you copy it to your partition, but i dont know why you're doing this seeing as you need to actually install the disc anyway...Very confused. cheers in anticipation, ash- Edited February 6, 2007 by Tageri Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/41347-native-installing-osx-without-using-dvd-drive/ Share on other sites
macgirl
It can be done but it's a closed cycle because you need a Mac OS already installed to make the Installation Package work. You can install an old Mac OS like 10.4.1 that not require the PAE thing, but you need at least 10.4.3's disk utility to format your partition in order to boot newer installations. And I don't remember if the 10.4.3 can be installed without the PAE requirement. From reading about similar insallations (on similar and older acer aspire notebooks than my own) i've established that osx 10.4.6 will be able to install on the laptop natively, which is what i'm trying to do. I'm still no further along with dd. From what I know you have to have a full hard drive dedicated to it or something, and as i've only got one hd on this machine i'm unable to let osx have it all. Is there no other way? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/41347-native-installing-osx-without-using-dvd-drive/#findComment-296389 Share on other sites
resol
I've the same problem. I also started a thread about it some hours before. I dont have a dvd drive either. I searched with google and found some guys who said they just wrote the dvd.iso to a fresh partition on there hard drive. The problem is that there wasnt more explanations on that. I know dd from Linux but I cant imagine that this might work without writing something special to the mbr. Please could someone explain this? dong
If you can access another computer other than this, you can intall on that machine and make a ghost img for you assuming you have an external harddisk available to transport the file.
