El Dizzee Posted February 4, 2007 Share Posted February 4, 2007 Hey everyone, I was hoping maybe somebody could give me some advice on dual booting Windows and Mac on my intel laptop cause I’m at a complete loss! I'll be really thorough with the exact steps I've taken so far, maybe it can shed some light on my situation. I’m currently using a Toshiba Satellite M40 laptop with Intel Pentium M processor at 1.86GHz and 512MB of RAM. I have Windows XP Media Center 2005 installed on one partition and I’ve installed OS X on another partition (of the same HDD). To do so, I used the diskpart utility in Windows to create a second primary partition (consisting of 16GB of previously unallocate dspace) using the command "create partition primary id=af". Next, I ran the OS X Tiger 10.4.6 install cd from Acronis Disk Director Suite 10. From the OS X installer I was able to format that partition to Mac OS Extended (journaled), which I believe has now made the partition HFS+ because I was able to install OS X. The problem with this is that, although it seems like the install went off without a hitch, when I use Acronis OS Selector to run my newly installed OS X I see no option to choose any operating system other than my current XP operating system. I've experimented with the Chain0 method, but that didn't work either, probably for the same reason the OS selector didn't work. I believe it has something to do with the fact that Windows doesn't know how to detect or run anything from an HFS+ partition, but I don't know how to get around this. Does anyone have any ideas/advice? El Dizzee Posted February 5, 2007 Author Share Posted February 5, 2007 Yeah, I did read that actually. Unfortunately, I don't think this method quite addresses my problem. That method describes an alternate way of booting OS X from startup, but I'm not at that point yet. I've tried several ways of booting OS X but I haven't managed to do so even using OS Selector. When I reboot my computer it loads straight to XP with no option to boot any other operating system. I'm pretty sure that OS X is installed on my second partition, but Windows doesn't even see that it's there so when I turn on my computer it's as if I only have one operating system installed. Sorry - just to clarify: trixxie's guide says "1. With XP installed in first Partition, create a new one (primary) and install macosx, after that you have a disgusting darwin boot loader that auto load Macosx if you don´t press F8." What addresses your problem is the Extended Fdisk part of the post - it explains how to install and configure an alternative boot manager that sees OS X. Further down the thread there are also some ideas on how to make the chain0 method work, if you prefer that instead of xFdisk... El Dizzee Posted February 5, 2007 Author Share Posted February 5, 2007 dvornik - I did as trixxie's guide said with the eXtended Fdisk and I was able to create a boot menu that selected between my XP partition and my OS X partition. When I selected the OS X partition, however, it led me to the Darwin bootloader which started to load my files (basically a black screen with a bunch of lines of loading text racing down my screen) and then once it finished doing that it left me with an empty black screen and stayed that way. I can tell I'm getting much closer to having this work, but I don't know why I'm getting this error. Any ideas? dvornik Posted February 5, 2007 Share Posted February 5, 2007 (edited) Have you ever been able to get to OS X desktop? It sounds like your boot manager works OK now but OS X can't load. If you never reached the OS X desktop then the problem is not the boot loader but the OS X installation itself. What is the last several things it shows before failing? What options (if any) have you chosen during the OS X setup? El Dizzee Posted February 5, 2007 Author Share Posted February 5, 2007 No, that's the problem, I haven't gotten to the desktop at all. The last thing I see before an empty black screen is the Darwin bootloader loading a bunch of Mac files. And this is only after having tried trixxie's method - before this I simply couldn't come close to starting OS X. When I use a program called Macdrive I can see the partition in which OS X is installed as well as all the system files, and that's the only way I can actually tell that it's installed. Aside from that, I've got nothing. As for the options I chose during the installation - it appears that your picture is very similar to what I've been seeing... I believe I selected the options 'printer drivers', 'additional fonts', 'language translations' and 'OSX86 hacks group'. I think you might be right about the installation being faulty. Not sure what could have been done differently to make it work... dvornik Posted February 5, 2007 Share Posted February 5, 2007 Different DVDs include different hacks and patches. For now from whatever DVD you install try to check only the Intel patch (out of what looks like hacks and patches - you can decide yourself if you need printer drivers and language packs). In the case of the linked picture (i think it's one of the 10.4.5 releases) you probably need Owned as well, newer DVDs don't have it. El Dizzee Posted February 5, 2007 Author Share Posted February 5, 2007 Well you're right - it turns out that I've accidentally been selecting an AMD patch as well during my installs. However, I tried installing again and this time without choosing the AMD patch and it still didn't work, although I did get a bit further. This time after seeing all of those loading files my computer froze at a screen with a bunch of text/code. Unfortunately I was unable to screenshot it, but the gist is that it didn't work. I read that it's possible that the 10.4.6 version won't work on my laptop and that it might be better for me to try the 10.4.4 version. Do you think that might be the case? I think I may have found another problem with the way I've been installing... don't know how to get around this problem, but I think this may be the main reason I'm having so much trouble. I've been using the 10.4.6 Tiger OS X DVD to install the Mac OS but I have never been able to do so by booting directly from the DVD. Every time I tried I got the error 'com.apple.boot.plist not found'. However, when I started the DVD from Acronis OS Selector I was able to boot successfully and install Mac OS from there (although the guide I was using to do this said specifically not to do that.) Using the 10.4.7 install DVD on a newer version of my laptop I WAS able to install Mac OS by booting directly from the DVD and OS X86 is working great on it (with a few exceptions). I just CAN'T get it to work on my older laptop. It's baffling me. So if you have any advice I'd really appreciate it, you've been so helpful. Thank you so much!
