Blackboxen
My Siemens C75 phone works perfectly for syncing with XP -- but I don't hear a peep on OSX. I use an el-cheapo IrDA-to-USB dongle that came with a W2K driver and works with XP. I gather Apple dropped support for infrared somewhere along 10.2. I've scoured the 'Net looking for AppleUSBIrDA.kext (from 10.1 or 10.2), which is supposed to provide some IrDA support, but no luck; I've installed countless Mac-infrared drivers, no luck. How do y'all find an old .kext and make it work in a more recent version? Any pointers on where to look, or how to proceed will be appreciated. starodub
I don't know if a sync works, but there is a decision if you want to use (E)GPRS (at least): look for the instructions and a list (with download ability) of various cell phones - modems scripts: www.taniwha.org.uk. It says a better way to use generic script from the site, not the device-specific one. What about making work usb irda devise - for those who even can't see it in system profiler>usb section. I've found this instructions: Apple currently sell the Belkin Infrared adapter on their web Apple Store sites, but loads of people have had trouble using it with Mac OS X as it includes a floppy disk with PC drivers on it. After reading loads of sites, and seeing everyone having the same problem, I thought I'd better post the answer I have found... First, plug the SmartBeam into USB port one on your PowerBook G4 (that's the one closest to the power socket). Turn on your infrared device, and activate its infrared dectection and place it in range of the smartbeam. Now load the Apple System profiler by clicking "About This Mac" in the Apple menu and then the "More Info" button (or via the Applications -> Utilities folder). Click on the "Volumes & Devices" tab and wait for it to load then select "Window" and then the "Refresh" option. The IrDA adapter should now show up as a USB connection. Load the System Prefs and select Networking, and this should force Mac OS X to find a new Comms Port and it will load IrDA USB Modem into the available options! Hope this helps all the lost people out there took me a week to crack it -- it worked on PB 12" G4 Superdrive running 10.2.6. instructions taken here and instructions for the modem scripts: OS X Instructions 1. Drop the modem scripts into Library:Modem Scripts 2. Set up PPP: A. Open Network Preferences B. Optional: Create a new location - call it "GPRS" or whatever (not absolutely necessary, since the modem config in the current location can have different settings to the existing Ethernet, etc. ports, but a separate location may be useful if you already have a standard GSM dial setting for the same IrDA/Bluetooth/USB port in your default location) C. Select "Show: 'IrDA Modem Port'" (or a USB or Bluetooth serial port if you are using those) D. Select the PPP tab and enter your ISP name in "Service Provider". E. Enter in "Telephone Number" the APN provided by your network, or NONE if it has no APN. F. Enter the Account name & Password, or leave them blank if there are none for your network G. Press the "PPP Options..." button H. Make sure that 'Send PPP echo packets' is not selected I. Click 'OK' 3. Set up modem A. Select the IrDA Modem or Bluetooth Modem (or the equivalent USB port name) tab in Network Preferences B. Set 'Modem: "Ericsson GPRS "' C. Set 'Enable error detection and compression in modem" to activate 115200 bit/s port speed, unless you need to reduce the serial speed to 57600 bit/s for your USB cable or USB-serial adapter. D. Click the 'Apply' button to save the settings 4. If you are using Infrared, turn on Ericsson Infrared port (alternatively, activate Bluetooth): A. Navigate to Infrared Port settings B. Select '10 Minutes' and press Yes to activate IR Port (if you select 'On', port will stay on until you manually turn it off) C. Line up phone IR port facing IR port on PowerBook. 5. Connect: A. Open Internet Connect B. Select 'IrDA Modem Port' (or the equivalent USB port name) C. Click 'Connect' D. No dial/modem sounds are heard during connection process Extra hints: 1. To monitor the infrared connection in OS 9, open the Infrared control panel to see that it shows IrDA devices in range. It will also show the connection process. In OS X, set the 'Show IrDA status in menu bar' checkbox in the IrDA Modem pane of Network Preferences. 2. In OS 9, you can switch between the Remote Access configurations from the Control Strip, or using Location Manager. Location Manager can also switch Modem and TCP/IP configs, so it is by far the easiest way to switch between GPRS and any other set-ups you may have. (teken here) I tried it and nothing worked. I have a sigmatel 4012 irda usb (it's also known and detected later as 4200) so I loaded appleIRControl.kext (sudo -s /system/library/extensions/appleIRControl.kext) - and the device appeared in system profiler. So my current issue - it's not shown in Network Preferences ports list.
