First of all I have tried for 4 days to get this going and did not want to post the Noob ?'s so I did what I could.

Inspiron 1501 specs

Turion 64 X2 TL-50

1 GB Ram

ATI radeon 1150

80GB SATA drive

40GB USB drive

Used JAS 10.4.8 install, only seleted the AMD kexts from install. As we know the ATI SATA does not work (if someone has a kext and knows how to get it to work let me know). This is what I did and what works.

Used Seagate IDE 40 GB drive attached with a USB TO IDE controller, the install program saw the drive in the disk utility so I setup the drive, I then restored the install DVD to the 40 GB and then ran the install over top of it, (not sure why, but I had done so many different things just thought why not). System is now up and running mostly, I did not run the ./patcher after the install, can anyone give insite to me as to what this is supposed to do? Here is what works.

System boots and runs (have installed office and a few other apps)

Dell 1390 Wireless worked right off the bat and connected to my wireless

DVD burning

USB obviously works

Trackpad

DOESN'T work and looking for help with it if anyone can.

Sound

ATI SATA

ATI 1150 (i can only do 1024X768)

My whole train of thought here is that I have the OS running and if I can get a SATA Kext to work and show my drive I should be able to use a tool like HD cloner to move from USB to SATA, does that make sense? Once again I am new to all this and have tried my best to do what I can on my own, I feel like I have a great start I just need a little push from the experts.

Thanks everyone for your time.

Forgot to add thanks to ~llama the wireless 1390 works do to the following help

sudo nano /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist

(sudo prompts for your password, enter it)

A few lines down you'll see:

'en0' under 'BSD Name', change this to 'en1' (no quotes for any of it)

A couple lines further down 'IOInterfaceUnit' and just below it '0'.. Change that to a '1' (again, no quotes)

Now hit Ctrl+O to WriteOut (save) the file, and Ctrl+X to exit. Reboot. Now once you've rebooted the menubar icon will still say it isn't configured. No worries though! Open up system preferences and click on Network. It should tell you there was a new port discovered (airport) and voila, your airport connection is mapped to the Airport card instead of oddly through the ethernet interface.

I have the same laptop and wouldn't mind sticking OS X on it.

Could you describe in more detail what you did with the 40 GB IDE hard drive and the adapter. It was my understanding that you were able to get OSX86 on the 40 GB external drive. But were you able to then install it onto the SATA laptop hard drive? More detailed instructions would be appreciated.

This thread has helped me out a great deal. Thanks.

I believe the laptop uses integrated Sigmatel audio. If I'm not mistaken, doesn't OSX86 have a patch for the driver? If not, the audio is used in many dell laptop models and looking around for other threads relating to Dell laptops and OS X should help.

I ran into problems with the SATA when trying to install Linux some months ago. In the installer, there is some code you can affix before you boot to the boot command that will make the hard drive work. If someone can verify there is a good chance this same code for Linux will work the OSX86, I'll go dig it up.

As an update for those that care, I have gotten the Video resolution halfway fixed. In reading about the Radeon x1150 it appears like the root of the device is the x300 graphics. I used the Katana install and used my device id (5975) and in the system profiler is now shows as and x200 which is strange, but I can at least do the native 1280X800 for the LCD.

Sleepy, I am just about to start to on the audio today, I still have not got the SATA working yet, 2 of the things I have tried have killed the PATA driver and I lost my Cd with those fixes. I have tried the Kexts for the SB450 just to see what happens, the I image if I can find something for the SB600 the video, audio and SATA will work.

Dude PM and can give you a more detailed description of how and what I did.

What's the latest on getting a Dell Inspiron with Turion 64 X2 dal core CPU & 1GB memory to work with OSX ?

:gun:

I would like to know because my son is thinking about buying a Mini Mac and would go for a Dell PC instead if he could get Mac software to work on it. BTW he's going to University in September, so needs o buy something soon.

I also have the Dell Inspiron 1501 and I'm getting ready to dive in with both feet in putting OS X on it so any information to make this a smooth will be extremly welcome. From doing a lot of reading on this forum I know sata does not work at the moment so I will use a usd drive. The only question is in using a usb drive is the a performance hit that will keep the computer from running some of the applications?

Thanks for any information that you can provide.
