sultanoswing
based on the 1.2 version - it's now up to 1.31 Yes, it's good - a very slick, quick, painfree (for me) install. With software, most common stuff (OpenOffice, browsers, email) comes as precompiled PBI's which are 'point and click' installers like in windows or OSX. You can also compile from source using the FreeBSD ports system which has thousands of packages. Driver support is a little more spotty than Linux - although for some people, the built-in kernel detection of hardware is better than the linux kernel. YMMV. Technically, PC-BSD is not a 'distro', rather a fully integrated OS based on the latest version of FreeBSD (a Unix derivation, BTW). In my experience PC-BSD is a promising desktop OS...but I found some stuff too fiddly to get working e.g. Flash 9 browser integration. Lastly, PC-BSD (and Desktop BSD) are both KDE-based, whereas I prefer Gnome over KDE, and trying to compile Gnome into PC-BSD is, shall we say, time consuming and challenging. Give it a shot and see for yourself!
